Murlens Dove heads market at Hove ? A7 Race Preview | bettor.com

Murlens Dove heads market at Hove ? A7 Race Preview

Murlens Dove is regarded as the top favourite runner for tonight?s A7 race at Hove card. The contest of 515m Flat distance will commence at 11:28 (GMT). The total prize money for the event is ?114.

W Wrighting?s black bitch is lined-up to compete against Romeo Impact, Pevensey Patrick, Demonic Demon, Baby Stardust and Tullowmac Joy.

Let us take a look on the career chart of the hot favourite.

Murlens Dove

The four-year-old veteran runner made her debut in June 2010. She has been an above average performer throughout her career. Since the dawn of 2012, she has been at the peak of form.

By winning a couple of consecutive races with big margins during the first decade of the calendar month, the daughter of Westmead Hawk out of Murlens Lass has hiked her confidence to a great extent.

In her last outing on February 16, she finished third. The brilliant bitch is likely to enjoy good time tonight, having 80 percent chances to finish first.

Among the other five runners, Tullowmac Joy and Demonic Demon are supposed to seal second and third spots respectively in the race. Following are the career portraits of the duo.

Tullowmac Joy

B Clemenson?s white and black bitch enjoyed a great victory on February 16. Earlier, she had won a big race during January. Overall, she has been somewhat inconsistent in her career.

The bitch?s fresh success has boosted up her morale to some extent. The daughter of Westmead Hawk out of Droopys Ruby now seems to be in a position to gain at least second rank in tonight?s competition.

Demonic Demon

After a long failure streak, the trainee of J Gammon won two consecutive races during the third decade of the last month. However, the black dog could not be able to perpetuate this winning momentum and went on to lose at least five subsequent races in a row.

In tonight?s contest, he is supposed to show sufficient resistance and finish at least 3rd.

Conclusion

Pevensey Patrick is likely to give enough tough time to the favourite trio while the remaining two hounds will not make impact. So, it will be hard for Murlens Dove to cope with all these challenges but her previous records augur well for her. Let us get ready for the action.

Kodak _ and film _ saying goodbye to the Oscars

(AP) ? Each year at the Oscars ceremony, Hollywood says goodbye to stars and filmmakers who've passed away. This year, the award show will bid adieu to the Kodak Theatre.

Just a decade ago, the glamorous 3,300-seat venue was touted as the Oscars' first permanent home, but the 131-year-old company has forfeited its sponsorship of the venue as it struggles with bankruptcy.

The move symbolizes Kodak's fading star power in Hollywood. Although seven of the nine "Best Picture" nominees were shot on Kodak film, the industry's increasing use of digital editing and projection has ravaged the company's printing business.

About half of the world's commercial screens now show movies from digital projectors, and by some estimates, film reels will soon be a thing of the past.

"35-millimeter is coming to the end of its life," said David Hancock, head of film and cinema for research firm IHS Screen Digest. "In four years' time there will be no film printing business."

Kodak film has long been a favorite of cinematographers. But more and more movies are shot using digital cameras, and the notion of a "cutting-room floor" littered with celluloid scraps has given way to studios with computerized tools such as Avid Technology Inc.'s Avid DS and Apple Inc.'s Final Cut Pro.

At their peak, motion pictures accounted for more than 12 billion feet of film processing each year, enough to reach the moon and back five times, according to IHS. This year, IHS predicts film processing will shrink to about 4 billion feet as an increasing number of theaters receive their "films" by satellite or via hard drives delivered by courier.

"We no longer ship (film) to most theaters," Philippe Dauman, chief executive of Paramount Pictures owner Viacom Inc., told a conference last month. "We have helped them implement digital distribution so we don't have to make so many prints."

The billions of dollars that major studios save on film ? and its costly ingredient, silver ? has resulted in revenue declines for the Eastman Kodak Co. division that once accounted for the vast majority of the company's overall revenue.

In the first half of 2011, revenue from the division that makes motion picture stock film was $763 million, about half the $1.57 billion it posted in the same period in 2008.

Film printing volume was crucial to Kodak. Although it takes about 1 million feet to shoot a feature film, studios need about 100 million feet to print enough copies for the widest of North American releases.

Kodak sees its future in commercial imaging devices and printing. Still, the motion picture business is significant, accounting for somewhere under a quarter of its revenues. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January with $6.7 billion in debt.

Kodak is unable to afford the marketing boost the Oscars once gave it.

Last week, a bankruptcy court judge approved its early exit from a 20-year naming rights deal it signed with Kodak Theatre owner CIM Group in 1999. As a result, Kodak won't have to pay the $3.6 million annual naming fee.

The Kodak Theatre, which was custom-built for the awards show and first played host to the ceremony in 2002, will be described to millions of viewers on Sunday simply as the "Hollywood & Highland Center."

The judge's decision came too late to remove the signs outside, which may cast a sense of gloom over an industry already rocked by technological change.

"I think everyone looks at Kodak's name coming off the theater with a degree of sadness mixed with respect," said Chris McGurk, chief executive of Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., which installs digital projectors for thousands of movie screens and is getting into the business of putting live video feeds into theaters. "It's just that the tide has shifted. The digital rollout is moving great guns. It's unfortunate that the great companies that helped build the film business can't all be part of it going forward."

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which declined to comment for this story, is reportedly considering a move to a different venue.

The Academy won't suffer financially from the unpaid fee, since it doesn't have a direct relationship with Kodak and most of its $100 million annual budget comes from licensing the Oscar ceremony's broadcast, according to Moody's Investors Service. The Academy leases the space from CIM Group.

It's not as if Kodak didn't see the digital future coming. Last October, Kodak licensed its patented laser projection technology to Imax Corp. to allow digital projectors to work in domes and other huge theaters that were once reserved for film.

Even if its name is gone from the Oscars, Kodak will still be a part of filmmaking, as long as Academy voters continue to pick movies with that rich, grainy "film look." Kodak stock film was used to shoot Oscar-nominated movies such as "War Horse," ''The Tree of Life," and "The Help," even though the captured images were converted for digital editing and delivery.

Mark Graziano, senior vice president of post-production at "War Horse" maker DreamWorks Studios, said the end of the sponsorship serves as a reminder of the "lost art" of film production, and of the workers who once had titles like "negative cutter." It used to take two weeks, for example, just to prepare a rough cut for studio executives to view in screening rooms. The process is nearly instantaneous now.

"It makes you nostalgic for the days when we only worked with 35-millimeter film," Graziano said, noting that film still has a place at many studios. "You look at many filmmakers that swear by film capture, their movies always look gorgeous. It's hard to turn your back on that."

Rowan could be next legal battleground over public prayer ...

The U.S. Supreme Court?s decision to let stand a ruling that Forsyth County commissioners? opening prayers are unconstitutional is rippling across the state as other governments examine their own practices.

And it could be setting up a legal showdown in Rowan County.

The nation?s highest court declined in January to hear an appeal to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals? 2011 ruling that prayers to open Forsyth County board meetings were too overwhelmingly Christian.

That decision ended a five-year court battle between Forsyth commissioners and critics of the board?s prayer policies. It led the American Civil Liberties Union to call on other government bodies to adhere to the ruling and end sectarian prayer.

Rowan was among 25 to 30 government bodies across North Carolina to get a letter recently from the state chapter of the ACLU citing residents? complaints about prayers that open their meetings.

Last week, a number of Rowan commissioners said they won?t alter the board?s policy or ask anyone to tone down their beliefs when giving the invocation to start meetings. Commissioner Jim Sides even said he?s willing to go to jail over it.

Katherine Parker, the state ACLU?s legal director, said Friday that most of the governments contacted are working with their county and city attorneys ?to make sure they?re in compliance with the law.?

?The Rowan County Board of Commissioners is the first one out of 25 or 30 saying that they?re going to completely disregard the law,? Parker said.

? ? ?

The Forsyth County prayer fight stretches back to at least 2006.

According to reporting by the Winston-Salem Journal, the ACLU asked commissioners in October of that year to stop opening meetings with prayer ?invoking the name of Jesus Christ.? and adopt a policy banning sectarian prayers.

In early 2007, three Forsyth residents represented by attorneys for the ACLU and Americans United for Separation of Church and State filed a federal lawsuit seeking to stop sectarian prayer at county government meetings.

Over the next couple of years, the commissioners agreed to accept free legal defense from the conservative-Christian Alliance Defense Fund and cash from the N.C. Partnership for Religious Liberty to help pay the ACLU?s legal fees if the county eventually lost the case.

Beginning in late 2009, the county lost successive court rulings and appeals in federal and district courts, then in the 4th Circuit Court, where the majority opinion said that even though the county?s policy was to invite local religious leaders to pray ?according to the dictates of their faith? but to avoid proselytizing or disparaging other faiths, the prayers were still unconstitutional because they ?referred to Jesus, Jesus Christ, Christ, or Savior with overwhelming frequency.?

When the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal to that ruling, it essentially let stand the court?s landmark 1983 decision ? in a case involving the Nebraska state legislature and its paid chaplain ? that there?s nothing wrong with opening governments meeting in prayer, as long as the prayer doesn?t favor one religion over another.

Parker, the ACLU legal director, puts it this way:

?A reference to a general god is considered nonsectarian. What?s sectarian is when someone references a deity in whom only a particular religion believes.?

Parker said with the Forsyth County ruling, she expects the ACLU will hear more complaints about sectarian prayer. But she?s already hearing about governments statewide reviewing their own policies to head off those complaints.

? ? ?

In Kannapolis, city officials have been aware of the Forsyth case for some time, City Manager Mike Legg said, and the issue ?sort of came to a head with Rowan County receiving the letter.?

While Kannapolis has no specific policy, it does have a longstanding tradition of prayer to open meetings. Council members pray on a rotating basis. Legg said he?s never heard a complaint from a resident and doesn?t think he would, ?but it?s pretty clear that?s secondary in the end to what the courts say.?

Legg said Wally Safrit, the city?s attorney, is studying the prayer issue now. He said city officials will likely ?explore alternatives? and bring an opinion to the council at an upcoming meeting.

?We?re not waiting for pressure from any outside groups,? Legg said. ?We?ll take it up sooner rather than later.?

He added, ?If it?s the law of the land, which it sounds like it is, we won?t be the only ones having to sort though that issue.?

Richard Koch, attorney for Cabarrus County, said that while Cabarrus officials are evaluating the 4th Circuit Court?s ruling, they?re doing it ?in view of other case law.? The answer may not be as ?black and white? as the ACLU argues, he said.

?We certainly need to be in compliance with the law. ? I am not conceding we?re not at this point,? he said. ?That decision is subject to interpretation. It?s a very complex area of law and the decisions from the different circuits aren?t all uniform.?

Koch said Cabarrus commissioners believe their handling of prayer is inclusive. The county invites local clergy to give the invocation at meetings and while most of those who do are Christian, he recalls a rabbi praying to begin one meeting.

Cabarrus commissioners have received no complaints, Koch said, and unless they determine it should be done differently, they?ll continue inviting clergy to pray at meetings, such as the one scheduled to pray Monday.

The issue hasn?t yet crossed the radars of some other local governments.

Doug Paris, interim city manager in Salisbury, said the question hasn?t been raised among city officials.

?I?ll check in with our city attorney,? Paris said. ?We haven?t talked about it.?

As in Kannapolis, Salisbury City Council members take turns praying to open their meetings. Paris said the content of the invocation ?depends on who gives the prayer.?

Paris points out the city?s efforts to promote diversity, including inviting leaders of different faiths to pray at the annual Mayor?s Spirit Luncheon.

?One of our values is to be inclusive as a city,? he said.

To groups like the ACLU, though, diversity may be no substitute for nonsectarianism, especially at meetings where government policy is made.

?If a Hindu gives a prayer and prays to Vishnu, that?s a sectarian prayer,? said Parker, the ACLU legal director.

? ? ?

Local governments aren?t the only ones facing questions over how they incorporate prayer. Earlier this month, the ACLU sent a letter to the N.C. General Assembly contending prayer during sessions violates the First Amendment.

Responding to that letter, which was also based on the 4th Circuit?s ruling in the Forsyth County case, House Speaker Thom Tillis accused the ACLU of harboring a ?radical, far-left agenda that is out of touch with most North Carolinians.?

And he argued the ?same Constitution that prohibits government sponsored religion also protects the rights of individuals to exercise their faiths as they so choose.?

The battle goes beyond North Carolina. The Supreme Court last month also declined to hear a similar appeal of a 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals ruling which found a Delaware school board?s prayers unconstitutional.

Similar skirmishes are erupting all over the nation. But for this state, Rowan County ? where the words ?In God We Trust? are affixed to the county administration building ? could become ground zero in the fight over prayer.

Last week, county attorney Jay Dees told commissioners in an email that while he has ?appreciated our board?s general stance on this issue over the past several years ? the primary legal concern now is that our (board) takes an oath to uphold the Constitution and laws of the United States and our state.?

He said the board?s practice of opening meetings with sectarian prayer conflicts with federal and state law as interpreted by the 4th Circuit Court in the Forsyth Case and asked for feedback from commissioners.

Most said the board should continue as it has, with members taking turns giving the invocation at meetings. Commissioner Jim Sides penned an even more defiant response.

?I will continue to pray in JESUS name,? Sides wrote. ?Chairman (Chad) Mitchell, I volunteer to be the first to go to jail for this cause ? and if you will go my bail in time for the next meeting, I will go again!?

Parker, the state ACLU?s legal director, said there?s a very real possibility that would result in court action. She said the group has gotten a half dozen complaints from three or four people in Rowan County since 2009 ? more than it?s gotten for any other local government in that span ? and some of them are willing to serve as plaintiffs in a lawsuit.

She pointed out that Forsyth County, when it lost, was ordered to pay more than $200,000 for the ACLU?s legal fees.

?It?s not just a matter of somebody going to jail,? she said. ?I think if I were a community member in Rowan County, I would be concerned about my county commissioners swearing to uphold the law in the constitution, then refusing to do it.?

Mitchell said Friday he believes the board will ?talk about a potential policy? at some point. For now, he said, commissioners will continue taking turns opening their meetings with prayer.

?At the moment, they?ll give a prayer the way they see fit,? he said.

If he remembers the order correctly, Mitchell said, the chairman is scheduled to give the invocation at Monday?s meeting. He said he plans to pray ?the way I always have? ? in Jesus? name.

'Celebrity Apprentice' Stars Talk Bonding On Set

Aubrey O'Day and Debbie Gibson tell MTV News they 'didn't get along in the beginning.'

This Sunday, a slew of celebrities will backstab and cat fight their way to the top of the heap when "Celebrity Apprentice" kicks off its new season. Considering who made the cut — a Gotti, a real housewife, several comedians and a few pop stars — drama will certainly ensue.

MTV News had the pleasure of catching up with Debbie Gibson and former Danity Kane singer Aubrey O'Day, who revealed how they went from enemies to besties while shooting the show.

"I was somewhat familiar, but I was a little bit of a victim of perception," Gibson said about O'Day, who is best known for her drama-filled run on MTV's "Making the Band." "I knew Aubrey's persona, but not really a lot about her; I try not to judge anybody until I meet them anyway."

"I had Debbie Gibson, of course, on my iPod, and if I didn't have it on my iPod, I heard every one of her songs during the entire show," O'Day joked.

While the two ladies are good pals now, O'Day recalls when that wasn't the case. "We didn't get along in the beginning; it wasn't disrespectful," she teased. "She was always singing all the time; it got on my nerves, but then we really got along. It's like a distant memory now."

Gibson, who owned up to being the "obnoxious singing girl," recalled when the two finally started to relate to each other. "There was an episode where we saw eye-to-eye over somebody else that was agitating both of us. So we bonded over that. We were kind of like 'Oh my god! We're on the same page after all.' "

O'Day describes both girls as having Type-A personalities, making it easy for them to eventually bury the hatchet. "What I like about Aubrey is we kind of didn't care that we didn't jell. ... We were being real about it," Gibson said. "And then we were able to get over it."

Hosted by Donald Trump, the show will also feature "American Idol" season two runner-up Clay Aiken, racecar driver Michael Andretti, TV and radio personality Adam Carolla, actor Lou Ferrigno, former talk-show host Arsenio Hall, magician Penn Jillette, rocker Dee Snider, "Star Trek" actor George Takei, "American Chopper" star Paul Teutul Sr., actress Tia Carrere, "Real Housewives" castmember Teresa Giudice, Victoria Gotti of "Growing Up Gotti," comedian Lisa Lampanelli, model and actress Cheryl Tiegs, Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza, and actress and model Patricia Velasquez.

The celebrity winner will earn $250,000 for the charity of their choice.

(AP) ? Protesters are coming by the thousands to Chicago, armed with smartphones, video cameras and social media links that will allow them to instantly map strategy, share plans and disseminate images of what's happening ? right in front of a police force renowned for responding with tough tactics.

Now a city councilman wants to forbid the Police Department from pulling the plug on all that electronic communication during the G-8 and NATO summits in May, taking away a tactic employed by authorities during a crackdown on democratic protests in Egypt but also in the San Francisco Bay Area during protests there last year.

"We're putting down a marker and saying, this has happened in other places and we don't even want it considered here," said Alderman Ricardo Munoz, who will propose his anti-crackdown ordinance at a Chicago City Council meeting Wednesday.

Munoz said he has no indication that police are contemplating shutting down cellphone use or social media sites. And aides to Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Chief Garry McCarthy say the leaders have no plans to put any restrictions on social media or other communications.

But Munoz's determination to take the tactic off the table is an acknowledgement that the front line at mass protests is increasingly technological as officials and protesters search for a balance between security and freedom of speech. It also illustrates a growing nervousness about clashes during the summits in a city that just last week agreed to pay more than $6 million to hundreds of protesters for wrongful arrests by police during a 2003 Iraq War demonstration.

"Chicago has a painful history going back to the Red Squad and 1968," said Munoz, referring to a police intelligence unit that into the 1970s spied on everyone from anti-war activists to the PTA and to the still-vivid footage of police beating protesters during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

In San Francisco last year, transit officials were roundly criticized after cutting off cellphones in subway stations to disrupt planning for a protest over a transit police shooting. Bay Area Rapid Transit officials defended the action as legal but later passed a policy to allow such a move only in response to extraordinary threats.

BART was the first and only government agency in the U.S. to block electronic communications as a way to quell social unrest, but its ensuing policy was also the only one of its kind, according to Linda Lye, an American Civil Liberties Union attorney.

More infamously, the Egyptian government shut down all Internet access last year after demonstrators used social media to coordinate protests and circulate images of brutality during the government crackdown. The move backfired by intensifying the protests, and the government eventually fell.

"In this day and age, social media is central to the First Amendment," said Andy Thayer, a Chicago activist who is helping plan the NATO/G8 protests. He said the ability to take photographs and video and post them on the Internet as events unfold is crucial for organizing and to alert the public.

Munoz's ordinance, a draft of which he gave to The Associated Press, explicitly prohibits the police from "shutting down mobile tower communications" during the summits, "using confiscated equipment to monitor or block mobile phone and Web access" and selectively blocking access to the Internet and social media sites.

McCarthy told reporters recently that police will not "do anything about the First Amendment except protect it."

But the City Council recently gave Emanuel extraordinary powers to make decisions regarding the summits in certain circumstances. And a spokeswoman for McCarthy would not say definitively that he wouldn't change his mind about needing to block communications in an emergency.

Blocking cellphone and Web access is both exceedingly simple and complicated ? with the physical act of rendering cellphones and other hand-held electronic devices useless being as easy as flipping a switch at a base station of a cellphone tower.

Officials also could use signal jamming devices similar to ones used by the military in war zones.

The legality of such steps isn't always clear, however.

"Under most circumstances they're not allowed to do that, (but) if there is a riot and rioters are burning a building, we don't know whether a temporary shutdown would be constitutional," said Eugene Volokh, a UCLA law professor who specializes in constitutional law and cyber law.

He said things get murky if police tried, for example, to take down a Facebook page where people are exchanging ideas about politics because one person is urging others to throw a Molotov cocktail at a particular building.

But some officers say the city ought not rule out blocking communications if protests get out of hand.

"I'm just concerned about officer safety and citizen safety," said Mike Shields, head of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police. "... If we have to take this action, if it's within the framework of the Constitution, then we have to consider it."

Does Sony Want to Make You Pay to Charge Your Gadgets? [VIDEO] (Mashable)

Sony is developing power outlet technology that will track energy consumption. The next logical step? Charging users by how much energy they consume while charging their smartphones, laptops and other devices.

[More from Mashable: Whitney Houston Album Price Spikes ? Then Falls ? After Her Death [REPORT]]

The technology uses IC chips to authenticate users of power outlets, according to a press release, determining the identity of people who plug in and whether or not they should be allowed to do so. While that advance in hardware capability could lead to better energy conservation, it could also be used to gouge digital-minded travelers and people who work out of cafes and other public places.

"Such as deployment to the waiting room or airport lounge cafes and restaurants, the station can be expected," reads a Google translation of Sony's Japanese press release.

[More from Mashable: Today?s Top Stories: Sony and Nokia Struggle, Apple Sells More Phones Than Ever]

Sony demonstrated the technology on Tuesday in Tokyo, according to IDG News. IDG News reports that Sony has not set a date for when the technology will become available, but that the company "hopes to cooperate with appliance makers, power companies, and large infrastructure developers in rolling it out."

While Sony says the authenticating power strips will utilize technology and hardware already in use elsewhere, implementing such a plan would require adding adapters to outlets if not replacing the outlets themselves. But Sony is also developing technology that could enable just one "reader" to monitor an entire household, IDG News reports.

Would you be willing to pay to charge your smartphone like you do to fill up your gas tank? Let us know in the comments.

U.S. gasoline price rises to $3.51/gallon: survey

The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States rose nearly 12 cents in the past three weeks to about $3.51, due in part to higher prices for North Sea crude oil, according to the nationwide Lundberg Survey.

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline rose 11.57 cents to $3.5101 as of February 10, the survey of about 2,500 gasoline stations in the continental United States found.

That was a greater change than the 3.5-cent rise in the previous survey, which covered the two weeks that ended January 20.

Survey editor Trilby Lundberg told Reuters that the higher prices came as the price for North Sea Brent crude rose more than $7 per barrel. Brent prices are more volatile and sensitive to changes in the Middle East than is U.S. crude.

One barrel holds 42 gallons.

Lundberg said U.S. pump prices will likely rise a few more cents in the short-term because retailers have yet to pass along all of the recent wholesale price increases.

Among cities covered by the survey, the lowest average price was in Denver at $3.01 per gallon. The price was highest in Long Island suburbs of New York, at $3.82. The price difference is largely because of taxes, Lundberg said.

Origami Bots: Paper robots running on air slither and slide their way to missions (Yahoo! News)

What do you see when you close your eyes and imagine?robots? Probably tough, metallic machines that can withstand all sorts of extreme conditions. While that's usually the case with most?DARPA-funded creations, the government agency believes there's a future for robots much, much softer than the usual. Enter one of DARPA's most curious projects ? the?origami-like paper bot that runs on nothing but air.

Some of the more conventional robots can't get into tight places, and in some instances like?search and rescue operations, flexibility may be crucial. The paper bots are highly-flexible, and can slither, twist, and undulate like snakes. Aside from paper, the robots are made of fabric and wire mesh, while silicone is used to mold their shapes.

The robots are connected to a hose that pumps compressed air around twice as strong as human exhalation. Because they don't have internal mechanisms, their movements are mostly determined by the way they're folded. A tube of paper crumpled the right way, for example, can lift roughly 2 lb. of weight when air is pumped.

Some of the more immediate uses for paper bots are?surveillance and rescue missions. But in the future, the researchers hope to shrink them down until they're microscopic in size, possibly for?medical applications.

Dating After 50: Revealing Secrets. Or not. ? Life in the Boomer Lane

An overwhelming number of people who choose to enter the dating world after age 50 have already lived at least 50 years.? And, if they are like most people over 50 (and many people under,) some of their early choices in life, while not resulting in life in a maximum security prison, may have still been in the category of ??Actions I Took Which May Have Been Beneath My Highest Possibility.?

Unless you have perpetrated crimes against humanity as a youthful despot, and your behavior is more than likely a matter of public record, the indiscretions you may have involved yourself in may now be causing you a bit of conflict.? Just how much do you reveal to a new relationship?

As a very broke and self-supporting 20-year-old college senior, I donated my eggs in exchange for money. It was a horrendous experience, and I rarely speak about it. Although I assume that some children resulted, I regret my participation and do not wish to know the results. I am now 35, engaged and planning to start a family. Must I tell my fianc? that there may be teenagers walking around with my genetic material?

We suggest you not tell your fiance.? However, we do suggest that in another 15 or 20 years or so, you check in with all these offspring.? There may be someone among them with the financial resources to care for you in your declining years, especially if the children you produce with your fiance turn out to be slugs.

A friend tried stripping at a ?gentleman?s club? when she was just out of college to earn some quick money before starting law school. It was 30 years ago, but she still cringes (she?s since become a women?s rights attorney) at the memory and isn?t eager to reveal this little blip in her career path to her new boyfriend. Is she wrong?

First of all, cut out the ?friend? crap.? We know it?s you. And the boyfriend of a women?s rights attorney is no less deserving of seeing his girlfriend clad in pasties and a G-string sliding upside down on a pole than is some sweaty drunk with crumpled dollar bills in his paw.

Back in college, I had an affair with my instructor.? Should I reveal?

Unless your grade went down even further after the affair, you can reveal this.

I have a large tattoo of Bill Clinton on my butt.? Should I have it removed?

Not before you post it on Facebook.

I briefly dated several men at the same time and has having sex with all of them.? What, exactly, should I reveal?

If you had sex with them individually, nothing.? If it was a group situation, do you have photos?? If so, please send them to this writer and a determination will be given.

In college, I once went out? and ordered a glass of beer.? I was underage, but the bartender didn?t ask for ID.? I drank the beer.

If this is the worst thing you have ever done, we suggest that you repeat your first 50 years.

Charitable donations in America rise as economy improves, new ...

The Philanthropy 50 list reveals that the top American donors gave over seven times as much money to charities than in 2010

? Philanthropy 50 list: America?s 10 most generous benefactors

Wealthy Americans have become more charitable as the economy has improved, but giving has yet to reach pre-recession levels, according to a new study.

The annual Philanthropy 50 list reveals that donors gave $10.4bn in 2011, up from $3.3bn the previous year ? the lowest level of giving since the Chronicle of Philanthropy began publishing the report in 2000.

The median of level of giving in 2011 was $61m, 54% higher than the median of $39.6m recorded the previous year, but almost 19% lower than 2007 median of $75m.

Agribusiness heiress Margaret A Cargill far and away topped the list of America?s most generous donors, with an estimated $6bn donation to the Anne Ray Charitable Trust and Margaret A Cargill Foundation, which she set up to support the arts, environment, disaster relief and other causes. Although Cargill passed away in 2006, her foundations only liquidated her assets last year. This is the first time she has made the list.

Ranked second was steel tycoon William S Dietrich II, who left $500m to his eponymous educational foundation, followed by Microsoft co-founder Paul G Allen, investor George Soros, and New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, who donated $372m, $335m and $311m respectively.

Also new on the list is Google co-founder Sergey M Brin, and his wife, who gave $62m to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson?s Research. Brin and his mother both have a gene mutation that is commonly associated with Parkinson?s.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffett were absent from the rankings, as was media mogul Ted Turner, as the the Philanthropy 50 doesn?t include payments based on pledges made in previous years. Gates donated about $68m last year toward a pledge he and his wife made to their eponymous foundation in 2004.

Among other donations he made last year, Buffett gave over 19m shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock worth close to $1.5bn to the Gates Foundation, as part of a pledge he made to the foundation in 2006, reports the Chronicle. Turner gave $50m to the United Nations Foundation and the Better World Fund in 2011 through the Turner Global Foundation, towards a $1bn pledge he made in 1997.

The list also does not record gifts from anonymous donors, which the Chronicle has previously reported totaled $546m in 2011.

Apart from Margaret Cargill, only two other donors of the 50 were women: Barbara Dodd Anderson, who pledged about $35m to a Quaker boarding and day school in Newtown, Pennsylvania, and the late Nina Ireland, a long-term donor to the University of California, who bequeathed $48m from her estate to the university. Several other women were ranked, but in conjunction with their husbands.

?We?re still on the cusp of seeing women with self-made wealth being rich enough to get on this list. I think we?ll see that in the next decade,? says Stacy Palmer, editor of the Chronicle.

Oprah Winfrey, who made the Chronicle?s 2009 list (published in 2010) with donations of $41m, did not feature on the list this year.

Notably, by the Chronicle?s metrics, California ranks as the nation?s most generous state ? by far. Fourteen of the top 50 donors reside in California. The next most generous state is Florida, with four givers. California was also the biggest beneficiary, followed by Missouri.

?It?s a trend we?ve been seeing over time as technology wealth becomes more important. First of all there?s more money and also people are starting to talk about giving it away in really serious sums. I think we?ll see California continue to grow in importance,? says Palmer.

Only three of the 50 donors came from New York, while several states saw no donors at all, a fact that Palmer says points to the fact that there is ?a wealth divide as well as a giving divide? among states.

Eleven of the donors on the list made their money from the finance industry (16 did pre-recession in 2006), followed by seven from real estate and five from inherited wealth.

Twelve donors have signed the Giving Pledge, started by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett to get billionaires to commit at least half their wealth to charity.
