Ann Romney, Wife of Mitt, Responds to Stay-at-Home-Mom Criticism

Ann Romney, the wife of likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and mother of five sons, is fighting a criticism that she “never worked a day in her life.”

“I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys,” she wrote on Twitter, prompted by a Democratic strategist’s challenge of her knowledge about the economy.

“Believe me,” Ann Romney wrote. “It was hard work.”

Hillary Rosen, a Democratic strategist, started the exchange during an interview on CNN yesterday in which she said of GOP front-running candidate Romney:

“Guess what, his wife has actually never worked a day in her life. She’s never dealt with the economic issues that a majority of women in U.S. are facing.”

President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign swiftly distanced itself from Rosen, but the incident underscores issues critical to both sides in the campaign.

Polls show Obama favored over Romney by about a 20-percent margin among women, a gap posing a major electoral hurdle to Romney’s hopes of victory.

Ann Romney also told Fox News, “My career choice was to be a mother. Other women make other choices. We have to respect women in all their choices.”

She also disputed the notion that she doesn’t understand the economy.

“Guess what women are taking about these days," she said.

"I don’t care if they’re stay-at-home mothers, working mothers or grandmothers. They are talking about jobs and a legacy of debt that we are leaving our children.”

Mitt Romney, seen above with Ann and supporter Donald Trump, all but wrapped up the Republican race with Rick Santorum dropping out this week.

5 Ways to Go 'Green' With Your Lawn ? Main Street Real Estate

Main Street Real Estate Vancouver

As Vancouver endeavors to become the ?Greenest City by 2020? there are many things we as individuals can do to help along the way. If you have a lawn around your Main Street real estate, consider using ?green? practices to keep it green.

Fortunately (and unfortunately) it rains a lot in Vancouver, so keeping our lawns green is not as hard as some areas of the world, but when summer sets in, here are some practices from Better Homes and Gardens to maintain a ?greener? approach:

Plan
In order to have environmentally friendly landscaping, it is important to take the appropriate steps.

Water
Develop your landscaping to use water efficiently. This practice is referred to as ?Xeriscape,? and is pronounced ?Zera-scape.? Xeriscaping refers to creating a landscape that limits the need for irrigation.

Proper Planting
In order to be certain your plants are resistant to drought, insects and others issues, soil preparation is essential.

Appropriate Maintenance
Once you?ve utilized the appropriate soil and properly established your plants, you still have to consider the ongoing water needed to sustain them.

Use Organics
Due to their limited impact on the soil, environment and household pets, organic fertilizers are becoming increasingly popular.

If you?d like to know more about buying or selling real estate around Main Street, please contact Vancouver Realtor Justin Leigh.

An undated photo provided by the Southern Poverty Law Center shows Brooke Harris, a teacher at Pontiac Academy for Excellence, in Pontiac, Mich., who alleges she was fired over a fundraiser for Trayvon Martin, a teenager who was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida. Harris was dismissed in March from Pontiac Academy for Excellence after she supported students' efforts to plan a wear-a-hoodie-to-school day. A number of groups, including the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala., have called for Harris to be reinstated. (AP Photo/Southern Poverty Law Center via The Oakland Press)

(AP) ? A teacher fired from a Michigan middle school after encouraging students to raise money for the family of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin said Tuesday she is confused by the dismissal and wants the school's administration to explain.

Brooke Harris was dismissed in March from Pontiac Academy for Excellence after she supported students' efforts to plan a wear-a-hoodie-to-school day. Martin was wearing a hoodie Feb. 26 when he was shot to death by a neighborhood watch volunteer.

A number of groups, including the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala., have called for Harris to be reinstated.

"I'm really confused why I got fired," Harris told The Associated Press. "I don't think I did anything wrong."

According to the SPLC, a national civil rights group, Harris' eighth-grade journalism students asked her about the death of Martin, 17, who was unarmed when he was shot in Sanford, Fla. No charges have been filed.

Harris gave the students an editorial-writing assignment on the shooting. But the students wanted to raise money for Martin's family and asked the school's administrators if they could each pay $1 to wear hoodies instead of school uniforms for a day, the group said. It said the school regularly has fundraisers in which students are allowed to "dress down."

The 26-year-old English teacher said she approached school administrators "through the chain of command" but that Superintendent Jacqueline Cassell said the project could not go forward. Harris said she was in the process of explaining this decision to the students when she was called for a meeting with Cassell.

The superintendent suspended Harris for encouraging the students and then fired her after she showed up at the school to drop off prizes for students when she had been told to stay away, the SPLC said.

"I didn't tell the kids, 'Let's go and do it anyway.'" Harris said. "I was actually, literally, in the process of talking to my kids about what we could do instead when (Cassell) requested the meeting with me and told me that I needed to let it go."

Cassell said she couldn't discuss personnel matters but that she wanted students to focus on learning, not activism.

"I'm a child of the civil rights movement," Cassell said. But "this is not the time in the school year" to distract students from academics.

"In every situation, there are work rules," she said. "When rules are violated, there are consequences."

Harris said her teaching record was clean and that Cassell "wouldn't let me defend myself."

Harris said she still wants someone from the school to provide more details on why she was fired.

"I just want a reason," Harris said. "She's got my phone number, and I'd appreciate if she'd tell me what I did wrong."

Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the Academy's decision was a "travesty" that would only hurt students.

"It taught the students who tried to organize and tried to raise their voice in terms of social justice that they will be repressed," Walid said at a news conference Tuesday morning at King Solomon Baptist that previewed a rally that evening at the Detroit church. "Instead of empowering our children ... the Pontiac Academy is actually teaching children to internalize oppression and internalize racism."

A few dozen people who attended the rally ? including a number of clergy members and community activists ? voiced their displeasure over both Martin's slaying as well as Harris' dismissal.

Speaker after speaker at the rally offered their support to Harris, who sat in a chair behind the podium and smiled and nodded in appreciation.

"We're ready to protest, we're ready to march, and we're even ready to give you legal counsel," Walid said, turning and looking at Harris. "If we can't settle this in the streets nonviolently, then maybe we need to settle it in the courts of law."

Charles Williams, the church's pastor, said that if Harris doesn't have her job back by Friday, he will lead a march at the school in Pontiac on Monday.

Harris wore a blazer to Tuesday's rally, but underneath it was a hoodie.

"I thought it was appropriate," she said.

Report says new evidence could tip the balance in aspirin cancer prevention care

Monday, April 9, 2012

A new report by American Cancer Society scientists says new data showing aspirin's potential role in reducing the risk of cancer death bring us considerably closer to the time when cancer prevention can be included in clinical guidelines for the use of aspirin in preventative care. The report, published early online in Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, says even a 10% reduction in overall cancer incidence beginning during the first 10 years of treatment could tip the balance of benefits and risks favorably in average-risk populations.

Current guidelines for the use of aspirin in disease prevention consider only its cardiovascular benefits, weighed against the potential harm from aspirin-induced bleeding. While daily aspirin use has also been convincingly shown to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer and recurrence of adenomatous polyps, these benefits alone do not outweigh harms from aspirin-induced bleeding in average-risk populations. But recently published secondary analyses of cardiovascular trials have provided the first randomized evidence that daily aspirin use may also reduce the incidence of all cancers combined, even at low doses (75-100 mg daily).

The current review, led by Michael J. Thun, M.D., vice president emeritus of epidemiology and surveillance research for the American Cancer Society was not designed as a comprehensive review of the literature, but instead is a focused discussion of the key outstanding issues in using aspirin as a cancer prevention tool.

The report says recently published meta-analyses of results from randomized trials of daily aspirin treatment to prevent vascular events have provided provocative evidence that daily aspirin at doses of 75 mg and above might lower both overall cancer incidence and overall cancer mortality.

In six primary prevention trials of daily low-dose aspirin, randomization to aspirin treatment was associated with an approximately 20% reduction in overall cancer incidence between 3 and 5 years after initiation of the intervention (metaodds ratio [OR] = 0.81; 95% CI 0.67-0.98) and a 30% reduction during follow up more than 5 years after randomization (meta-OR = 0.70; 95% CI 0.56-0.88). Cancer mortality was also reduced during study follow up that happened more than 5 years after the start of aspirin use (meta-OR = 0.63; 95% CI 0.49-0.82) in analyses that included 34 trials of daily aspirin at various doses. Surprisingly, the size of the observed benefit did not increase with daily doses of aspirin above 75-100 mg. Notably, these meta-analyses excluded results from the Women's Health Study (WHS), a large 10-year-long trial of 100 mg of aspirin taken every other day, which reported no reduction in cancer incidence or mortality.

"The accumulating data from randomized clinical trials provide an exciting opportunity to reconsider the potential role of aspirin in cancer prevention," write the authors. They say several important questions remain unanswered, such as the exact magnitude of the overall cancer benefit and which individual cancer sites contribute to this benefit. "However, these new data bring us considerably closer to the time when cancer prevention can be integrated into the clinical guidelines for prophylactic treatment following regulatory review by the FDA and the European Medicines Agency."

Shares, oil fall as U.S. jobs data stirs concern

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Global stocks and crude oil fell on Monday as investors reacted to the surprisingly sharp slowdown in U.S. jobs growth reported last week, which raised concerns about the strength of the world's largest economy.

Stocks on Wall Street and crude oil futures prices slid about 1 percent on the first trading day after the U.S. Labor Department reported the March jobs data. U.S. equity markets were closed on Friday for the Good Friday holiday.

The government reported that just 120,000 jobs were added in March, far below market expectations for 203,000 new jobs and the smallest increase since October.

Trade was light, as major markets in Europe as well as some markets in Asia, including Australia and Hong Kong, were closed on Monday.

In afternoon trading stocks pared losses, as did crude futures, while gains in safe-haven government debt were reined in, suggesting investors were starting to shrug off the jobs data.

"We have reacted to the weak unemployment numbers, and now we are shifting focus to earnings, especially the banks later in the week," said Paul Nolte, managing director of Dearborn Partners in Chicago.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 102.89 points, or 0.79 percent, at 12,957.25. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 13.17 points, or 0.94 percent, at 1,384.91. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 28.04 points, or 0.91 percent, at 3,052.46.

The major stock indexes had earlier been down more than 1 percent.

MSCI's all-country world equity index <.miwd00000pus> slipped 0.6 percent to trade near lows last seen a month ago.

The labor market report raised concerns about whether the U.S. economy is strong enough to boost growth elsewhere in the world as Europe's debt crisis resurfaces and worries remain about China's ability to avoid a hard landing.

China on Monday reported a jump in the annual inflation rate in March that topped expectations, rising to 3.6 percent as food prices remained volatile. But economists believe price pressures will moderate over the rest of the year, giving Beijing the flexibility to ease monetary policy to support growth.

U.S. Treasury debt prices rose, reflecting expectations that the U.S. payrolls report increased the chances of a third round of monetary easing measures by the Federal Reserve.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury note was up 4/32 higher in price to yield 2.03 percent.

Trade in U.S. interest rate futures also suggested that investors were betting rates would stay low well into 2014, reflecting the Fed's view on interest rates.

Oil prices pared losses as revived talks on Iran's nuclear program eased fears of supply disruption.

Negotiations between Iran and world powers over Tehran's disputed nuclear program will be held on Saturday in Istanbul. The resumption of talks that collapsed more than a year ago tempered worries about an immediate cut in supply or conflict.

Brent crude was down 87 cents a barrel to $122.56. U.S. oil traded $1.10 a barrel lower at $102.21.

The euro ground higher against the dollar and the yen, recovering from losses earlier in the session as the effects of the disappointing U.S. jobs data faded, although thin holiday trading exacerbated moves.

"There's maybe a bit of a soft tone in the dollar on the jobs report," said Mark McCormick, a G-10 currency strategist with Brown Brothers Harriman, though he noted that "price action has been pretty muted."

The euro traded as high as $1.3031 before more recently trading up 0.20 percent to $1.3119. The single currency also rose 0.3 percent to 107.12 yen, turning around earlier losses.

Spot gold prices rose $6.97, or 0.43 percent, to $1644.90.

Marathon mouse space mission boosts bone protection

A GROUP of mice have returned to Earth after the longest mission any animal has endured in space. The mice were floating around for 91 days to test a way to prevent the breakdown of bone.

Different types of bone cell either build bone up or break it down. For weight-bearing bones, breakdown cells become more active when there is no impact on the bone, such as in microgravity. "Astronauts experience around 20 to 30 per cent bone loss," says Sara Tavella at the University of Genoa in Italy.

Astronauts exercise and take calcium supplements to limit damage, but it is very difficult to return the bone to its original state back on Earth, says Tavella.

To examine other options, her team sent six mice up to the International Space Station. Three of the mice were genetically modified to produce extra pleiotrophin (PTN) - a protein involved in bone development.

The mice with extra PTN were protected from the breakdown of bone - losing only 3 per cent of the volume of their spine compared with a 41.5 per cent decrease in the normal mice (PLoS One, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0033179).

The protein treatment could be investigated for use in astronauts preparing for space, says Tavella.

Fedde Le Grand Headlines Steampunk Cosmic Opera Act II

NEW YORK — Due to post-Miami-EDM fatigue, Thursday night's Cosmic Opera Act II may have only been for New York's super-committed dance music fans. With 1,500 or so tickets sold, though, for those in attendance, the high-concept Opera-meets-EDM party was an exceptional effort.

Dubbed "Imbroglio," the second Act of CO was set in a steampunk world, with the experience meant to evoke the fire, angst and turmoil that comes after two people first meet and fall in love. It was similar to the way that EDM and Opera did in February when Cosmic Opera debuted, featuring Swedish House Mafia's Axwell as headliner.

"There's fire and gritty performances, and aerialists battling it out in a Thunderdome above the audience," Cosmic Opera founder Justin Cohen told MTV News Friday (April 6). "We have this claw chandelier, it's actually the heaviest chandelier in the world right now, and everything is moving, which goes along with that story of this is Imbroglio Act II. And now things are getting a bit crazier."

And crazier it did get, but in a uncontrived, cool way. Fire-wielding performers spit flames around the Opera's organ-like DJ booth and stage-flanking runways. A unique 360-degree laser was featured in a spectacular light display. "Eyes Wide Shut"-esque masked performer couples ambled about the crowds, shifting from infatuation to clash and back. Forty-foot-high LED screens moved forward and backward, and the chandelier claw would descend down into the audience lined with lights.

And Cohen and his team tapped a talent pool certainly capable of bringing an angsty, aggressive, hard-hitting audio experience to New York both nights in dBerrie, Funkagenda, Felix Cartal, Zedd and headliner Fedde Le Grand. Rising star Zedd continues to dazzle, and it's worth noting that for being a nice, young, smallish (in size up there onstage) guy, he continues to lay down among the more explosive sets in dance music. And Thursday night was no exception.

The venue's six LED screens depicted flames, and five dancers in white wigs and silver attire hit the stages' runways for Zedd's Opera entrance number, with Zedd signaling with his hands, "Let's do this." And with that, his onslaught began: Fans chanted back Angger Dimas & Bassjackers' "Ria." Giant lengths of steam shot out into the crowd for Dada Life's "Kick Out the Epic Motherf---er," and the audience seemed in a frenzy for Knife Party's whopping "Internet Friends."

After an electric set ended with a new song, and Zedd's new mash-up of "Slam the Door" and buddy Skrillex's "Cinema" (Zedd revealed to MTV News he calls it "Don't Slam the Cinema"), he handed the baton over, literally via a performer, to Dutch house music star Fedde Le Grand, who headlined both nights of COII.

A sumptuous violin solo performance led into Le Grand's headlining organ-DJ booth, steam-punked out with pipes and a baritone saxophone. And then FLG began his set with a hearty remix of his hit "So Much Love" and followed with room-shaking hit after hit. Calvin Harris' "Feel So Close," Steve Angello's "Knas," Benny Benassi's "House Music" and Arty's "Around the World" were all part of his arsenal. But so were some stellar reworks. Steam shots drove the crowd mental when FLG dropped opening performer dBerrie's remix of Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know." An unknown bootleg of OneRepublic's "Apologize" was masterful, as was a provocative "Leave the World Behind" vs. Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams."

After Fedde Le Grand's two-hour closing set and a three-hour production breakdown, Cohen and his team readied Friday night's final showing of Cosmic Opera Act II, which will see the Felix Cartal join in the festivities.
