Candida Linked To Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Psoriasis, and Other ...

In this recent study, Candida albicans was shown to to cause inflammatory and autoimmune reactions that lead to arthritis, psoriasis and other skin rashes, multiple sclerosis, and many other conditions and diseases ? http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/04/120405075223.htm

?This not only demonstrates that the composition of our microflora has a decisive role in the development of chronic illnesses, but also that the key cells causing illness can develop an anti-inflammatory ?twin?,? explained Dr. Christina Zielinski, first author of the study.
Their work is published in the current issue of the scientific journal Nature.

The 32-year old researcher from the Dermatology and Allergology Clinic at Charit? and Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies, and her colleagues identified the basic signals that contribute to whether or not a pathogenic or anti-inflammatory immune cell develops?

?I am convinced that an imbalance in our microbial microflora has a decisive influence on the development of chronic inflammatory illnesses like rheumatism, Morbus Crohn and psoriasis. Our organism is composed of ten times more microbial cells than our body?s own cells. Keeping this in check is not easy. Interleukin 1b is now turning out to be a decisive molecular switch, which the microbes use to dictate between healthy or sick,? says Dr. Christina Zielinski. She sees great potential in the therapy of inflammatory diseases by blocking this messenger substance. In contrast to other immune therapies this does not lead to a weakening of the immune system, but rather enables the cells instead to be anti-inflammatory if needed, without losing the ability to fight dangerous pathogens.?

Although not identified in this article, pulling up the abstract for this study shows Canida albicans as the cause ? http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nature10957.html

?Taken together these findings demonstrate that by eliciting different cytokines C. albicans and S. aureus prime TH17 cells that produce either IFN-? or IL-10, and identify IL-1? and IL-2 as pro- and anti-inflammatory regulators of TH17 cells both at priming and in the effector.?

It also identifies Staph Aureus as being able to counter the inflammatory effects produced by Candida albicans. Normal staph bacteria are beneficial to the skin and the body, whereas staph that has been exposed to antibiotics can cause life-threatening ilnesses. Antibiotics are also the main cause of systemic fungal candida. Antibiotics continue to upset the health of all individuals who are exposed to them, either directly through medications or indirectly through conventionally raised foods.

Correcting this imbalance requires a Multi-faceted approch that reverts the fungal form of candida back to it?s normal yeast form, boosts the appropriate immune response (as shown in the article above), detoxifies the body, and helps to restore normal healthy tissue flora. It?s vy important not to use anything that is designed to kill candida as this creates other imbalances. Restoring and preserving the balance of the intestinal flora is a very important component to correcting this overall imbalance.

The original article clearly identifies Candida albicans as the cause of these many conditions. The publicly-released article doesn?t identify it, which is an interesting omission?

Bugs that normally inhabit the skin may actually protect the body from infection, shows a study.

By the virtue of being the largest organ of the body, the skin represents a major site of interaction with microbes outside.

Although immune cells in the skin protect against harmful organisms, until now it has not been known if the millions of naturally occurring bugs on the skin, collectively known as the skin microbiota (skin flora), also have a beneficial role.

Using mouse models, the National Institute of Health (NIH) observed that such skin bugs contribute to protective immunity by interacting with the immune cells in the skin, the journal Science reported.

The investigators colonized germ-free mice (mice bred with no naturally occurring microbes in the gut or skin) with the human skin commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis, according to a NIH statement.

The team observed that colonizing the mice with this one species of good bugs enabled an immune cell in the mouse skin to produce a cell-signalling molecule needed to protect against harmful microbes.

Researchers subsequently infected both colonised and non-colonised germ-free mice with a parasite.

Mice that were not colonised with the bacteria did not mount an effective immune response to the parasite; mice that were colonised did.

The study was led by investigators in the labs of Yasmine Belkaid, at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, in collaboration with Julie Segre, at the National Human Genome Research Institute, and Giorgio Trinchieri and Heidi Kong, at the National Cancer Institute. All three Institutes are NIH components.

Curiosity Rover Will Sleuth for Clues to Water on Mars

NASA's newest Mars rover, Curiosity, has a tall task ahead of itself when it lands Aug. 6 on the Red Planet.

The rover, part of the $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory mission, will aim to search for signs that Mars is, or ever was, habitable. Since one of the key requirements of habitability is thought to be the presence of liquid water, Curiosity will seek signs of water buried beneath the Martian surface.

To do this, the rover will shove neutrons underneath the planet's surface in hopes that the particles bump against hydrogen, one of the two types of atoms that make up water molecules. Neutrons are subatomic particles that have no electrical charge. When a neutron hits a hydrogen atom, the neutron will slow to a near-stop because the two particles are about the same size.

?The goal is in about 20 minutes of pulsing and returning and detecting the signal, [the rover] can build up a fairly good understanding of how much water there is below the surface,? said Ashwin Vasavada, MSL's deputy project scientist. [11 Amazing Things NASA's Huge Mars Rover Can Do]

Neutrons have already been used on Mars to find what are believed to be ice reservoirs. In 2002, a high-energy neutron detector aboard the orbiting Mars Odyssey spacecraft found robust evidence of hydrogen on the higher latitudes of the Red Planet, lurking just underneath the surface.

From space, it's much easier to use neutrons to seek out water because high above a planet, there are many neutrons, Vasavada said. Closer to the surface, neutrons are so few and far between that MSL must carry its own artificial neutron generator.

Provided by the Russian Federal Space Agency, the Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) experiment onboard Curiosity will blast 10 million neutrons into the surface with every pulse. These pulses will only take an instant: typically one microsecond, or a millionth of a second. Curiosity can send these pulses out up to 10 times per second.

Gale Crater, where the Curiosity rover is supposed to land on Mars, is not expected to have vast tracts of water underground. Maps of the area show possible sulphates and clays in the lowlands.

As for water, NASA expects the landing site will have ?hydrated minerals,? meaning minerals that have water molecules or hydrogen-oxygen ions stitched into the mineral's crystal fabric. NASA says these minerals can ?tenaciously retain water? from a past time when water may have been more abundant on Mars.

Water might also be present in a transient form that changes with the Martian seasons, such as soil moisture that can increase or decrease according to the surrounding humidity.

DAN can also help researchers understand the ?water cycle? on Mars and compare it with what occurs on Earth. Our planet recycles its water in a continuum between the atmosphere and bodies of water such as oceans, lakes and underground reservoirs.

DAN will try to map out the Martian water cycle in conjunction with Curiosity's cameras and its weather station, which can capture properties such as humidity, wind speed, and temperature.

Figuring out where the water goes will help scientists understand how the Martian climate works. With a little analysis, this knowledge may just make the search for life a bit easier.

JPMorgan creates more management checks and balances

NEW YORK (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co Chief Executive Jamie Dimon reshuffled his management team, in a step that analysts see as creating more checks and balances in the upper ranks after the bank suffered from embarrassing trading losses.

Analysts said the changes, announced on Friday, position Michael Cavanagh and Daniel Pinto as prime candidates to succeed Dimon, 56, when he is ready to retire.

Cavanagh, 46, and Pinto, 49, were named co-chiefs of commercial and investment banking. Matt Zames, 41, was named co-chief operating officer and is also seen as a strong candidate to succeed Dimon.

In an interview, Dimon said that he has no plans to retire soon, but that he is always thinking about grooming successors.

"I serve at the pleasure of the board, but I do hope to be here for many, many more years," Dimon said.

The shake-up will result in a number of senior positions that are jointly held by two executives, at least temporarily.

Analysts said these co-heads may help prevent the bank from sustaining the same kinds of trading losses that occurred in the first half of the year. JPMorgan said two weeks ago that it had sustained nearly $6 billion of trading losses from bad bets made in its Chief Investment Office.

That group had been headed by Ina Drew before the losses surfaced in May and she left. The bank has admitted that few scrutinized Drew's group.

"What happened in the CIO office was that there weren't enough people taking a close enough look," said Richard Bove, an equities analyst at Rochdale Securities. "That was a lesson for every division in the company."

The losses from the bets known as the "London Whale trades" were a huge black eye for Dimon, a CEO long praised for his risk-management skills.

But Dimon said the changes were in motion before the CIO's difficulties emerged, and were driven in part by the difficulty of operating banking businesses given the profusion of new regulations globally.

"We have to make sure, for example, we are making loans in the right way around the world, and funding them properly and reporting them the right way," he said.

Dimon, whose bank was profitable throughout the financial crisis, has long complained about being stifled by new regulations. He famously ambushed Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke last year and expressed fear that new financial regulations will hinder economic recovery.

But as Dimon moves executives around for at least the third time in three years, it is clear that he is adapting to the new order. In a prior shake-up in June 2011, around the time of Dimon's confrontation with Bernanke, reporting lines were streamlined.

DECIPHERING THE PHOTO

Analysts scrutinize JPMorgan's executive changes with the intensity that Kremlinologists used to devote to May Day parade photos from Moscow, where the positions of Soviet officials hinted at who was on the way up or down.

For some executives, the news looks bad. Jes Staley, 55, heads JPMorgan's investment bank and has led its asset management and private banking arms. In the latest reshuffle, he was made chairman of the commercial and investment bank, a new position that on Wall Street often signals a more ambassadorial role rather than a hands-on management job.

Dimon likes to shift key lieutenants around, sometimes moving them from prestigious jobs to less impressive ones and then back up again. In June 2010, Cavanagh moved from chief financial officer to head of Treasury and Securities Services, a business that moves money around the world for big clients like multinational companies. That business generates stable revenue, but running it is not usually seen on Wall Street as requiring tremendous management acumen.

In May, Cavanagh was put in charge of a group that oversaw the bank's response to losses in the CIO, a key position for helping to rebuild investor trust in the bank. Cavanagh will now oversee corporate and investment banking businesses such as lending and merger advisory, a high profile position.

Cavanagh is a longtime prot?g? of Dimon. When Dimon was president of Citigroup, Cavanagh was chief administrative officer.

In 2000, Cavanagh followed Dimon to Banc One Corp as head of strategy and planning when Dimon became the bank's CEO.

Pinto, who heads JPMorgan's business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as its global fixed-income business, will oversee all trading operations. He will remain based in London.

Dimon said he likes to move promising executives around to give them experience in different parts of the bank, a technique popularized by Jack Welch when he was CEO of General Electric Co.

"The key is constantly changing and challenging people so that they are prepared," Dimon said.

SMITH'S PORTFOLIO GROWS

Gordon Smith, 53, will have mortgage lending and retail banking added to his remit, giving him oversight of all consumer banking businesses.

Smith, a former American Express Co executive, currently oversees credit cards and auto lending, and some analysts view him as a possible successor to Dimon.

For now, Smith will run the consumer banking business together with Todd Maclin, 56. But in 2013, Maclin will become a chairman of the consumer business.

Frank Bisignano, 52, who was put in charge of overhauling the mortgage business last year, in addition to his role as chief administrative officer of the bank, will become co-chief operating officer of JPMorgan as Smith takes on the mortgage business.

All told, Smith's domain will include some 50 million customers, 160,000 employees and half the earnings power of the bank.

Smith said in an interview that he intends to continue building Chase branding and customer service to try to grow in an era when the company is unlikely to make acquisitions.

Bisignano will share the COO post with Zames, who will remain head of the CIO and Mortgage Capital Markets.

In May, Zames was put in direct charge of the CIO. He has been unwinding the money-losing portfolio and overhauling the office. He will continue to run the CIO in his new post.

This week, Sanford "Sandy" Weill, the architect of mega-bank Citigroup, said in a television interview that the big banks should be broken up, along the lines of how Glass-Steagall laws broke up commercial and investment banking after the Depression.

Dimon has said he has no interest in breaking up his bank, but to some analysts, Dimon's moves looked like the bank taking a small step in that direction on its own. JPMorgan moved control of traditional commercial and investment banking businesses to one set of executives, and control of retail banking to another set.

"To us, this is Glass-Steagall lite," wrote Mike Mayo, an analyst at CLSA.

Radical Muslims plan opening ceremony protest outside park

LONDON (Reuters) - A group of British Islamists said they had received permission to stage a protest on Friday outside the London Olympic Park to denounce what they called the evil of the Games.

The group, led by some of Britain's most prominent Islamist figures, said they would gather outside the gates to the park in Stratford before the opening ceremony to condemn Britain and other countries they accuse of persecuting Muslims.

They aim to attract the attention of 60,000 spectators due to attend the ceremony in the main Olympic stadium that officially opens the Games at 9 p.m.

The group has set up a website, evilolympics.com, which has the tagline "While the world plays, Muslims are being killed around the globe".

"It will be one of the biggest demonstrations that the Muslim community has put on in the UK," said organizer Mizanur Rahman said, estimating that "easily hundreds" would attend.

Rahman served a four-year jail term for encouraging followers to kill British and American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq during a protest in 2006.

Another organizer is Anjem Choudary, who has led numerous similar protests and threatened to disrupt last year's royal wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton until police banned the planned demonstration.

East London, where the Olympic Park is located, is home to a large Muslim community housed in some of the capital's poorest neighborhoods. It is also home to a number of British Muslims convicted of involvement in plots since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Rahman said they had been given permission by police to stage Friday's protest and added it would not be their last during the Games.

"Appropriate policing plans are in place," a spokeswoman for the London force said.

Rahman said the decision of judo chiefs not to allow a Saudi athlete to compete wearing an Islamic headscarf showed why Muslims should boycott the Olympics, which this year coincides with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

"I would hope that this would be a sign they should not be in the Games," said Rahman.

Yoga may help stroke survivors improve balance

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? Group yoga can improve balance in stroke survivors who no longer receive rehabilitative care, according to new research in the American Heart Association journal Stroke.

In a small pilot study, researchers tested the potential benefits of yoga among chronic stroke survivors -- those whose stroke occurred more than six months earlier.

"For people with chronic stroke, something like yoga in a group environment is cost effective and appears to improve motor function and balance," said Arlene Schmid, Ph.D., O.T.R., lead researcher and a rehabilitation research scientist at Roudebush Veterans Administration-Medical Center and Indiana University, Department of Occupational Therapy in Indianapolis, Ind.

The study's 47 participants, about three-quarters of them male veterans, were divided into three groups: twice-weekly group yoga for eight weeks; a "yoga-plus" group, which met twice weekly and had a relaxation recording to use at least three times a week; and a usual medical care group that did no rehabilitation.

The yoga classes, taught by a registered yoga therapist, included modified yoga postures, relaxation, and meditation. Classes grew more challenging each week.

Compared with patients in the usual-care group, those who completed yoga or yoga-plus significantly improved their balance.

Balance problems frequently last long after a person suffers a stroke, and are related to greater disability and a higher risk of falls, researchers said.

Furthermore, survivors in the yoga groups had improved scores for independence and quality of life and were less afraid of falling.

"For chronic stroke patients, even if they remain disabled, natural recovery and acute rehabilitation therapy typically ends after six months, or maybe a year," said Schmid, who is also an assistant professor of occupational therapy at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis and an investigator at the Regenstrief Institute.

Improvements after the six-month window can take longer to occur, she said, "but we know for a fact that the brain still can change. The problem is the healthcare system is not necessarily willing to pay for that change. The study demonstrated that with some assistance, even chronic stroke patients with significant paralysis on one side can manage to do modified yoga poses."

The oldest patient in the study was in his 90s. All participants had to be able to stand on their own at the study's outset.

Yoga may be more therapeutic than traditional exercise because the combination of postures, breathing and meditation may produce different effects than simple exercise, researchers said.

"However, stroke patients looking for such help might have a hard time finding qualified yoga therapists to work with," Schmid said. "Some occupational and physical therapists are integrating yoga into their practice, even though there's scant evidence at this point to support its effectiveness."

Researchers can draw only limited conclusions from the study because of its small number of participants and lack of diversity. The study also didn't have enough participants to uncover differences between the yoga and control groups. The scientists hope to conduct a larger study soon.

Researchers also noticed improvements in the mindset of patients about their disability. The participants talked about walking through a grocery store instead of using an assistive scooter, being able to take a shower and feeling inspired to visit friends.

"It has to do with the confidence of being more mobile," Schmid said. Although they took time to unfold, "these were very meaningful changes in life for people."

MLS All-Stars set for Chelsea

By DAN GELSTON

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:56 p.m. ET July 24, 2012

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Landon Donovan played in MLS All-Star games when they resembled so many of the other ones played in the major sports.

Little at stake, little incentive.

That all changed once Major League Soccer revamped the format and started playing international teams. The best teams from abroad were coming to the U.S. to show they were the best in the world. So far, the MLS, where the quality of play is usually touted as inferior to the quality of the level overseas, has a 6-2-1 edge in the All-Star game.

There's no doubt the players get pumped playing against champions and top-level teams as part of the summer exhibition.

"They're more enjoyable for us," Donovan said. "In the past, when it was an East-West format, you didn't take it all too seriously. The game was, in some ways fun, but it was a little bit false. It isn't exciting for us as playing a real game."

Chelsea of the English Premier League is back for this season's MLS All-Star game Wednesday night at PPL Park. The stadium is home to the Philadelphia Union of MLS, and is located in nearby Chester, along the Delaware River.

This is the seventh time an English Premier League team will play the MLS All-Stars. The MLS defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the 2006 game. Dwayne De Rosario won the game with the lone goal. He's back again, along with All-Star teammates Donovan and Thierry Henry. Last year's game was held at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey and featured Manchester United.

Chelsea, which has won the English top flight on four occasions, is in the midst of a four-game American tour that featured the first soccer match at the new Yankee Stadium against Paris Saint-Germain, and a final exhibition vs. AC Milan in Miami.

Chelsea is using these games as a tuneup for its regular season. Playing well and earning playing time are much important than the result. But sure, the Blues want to come out winners. They understand the MLS has raised its magnitude of players and competition level over its nearly 20-year existence.

"I think it's evolved a great deal," Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard said. "I think David Beckham has been a huge influence on the game in terms of taking it worldwide and bringing a lot of attention. You can feel the level of the quality going up."

It's certainly a hit in Philadelphia, as the Union traditionally attract large crowds. On Wednesday, there should be plenty of Union fans in the stadium - they have their own Trekkies-type of fan cult called the "Sons of Ben" - but also plenty of people pulling for Chelsea, which has taken the U.S. by storm.

Chelsea helped attract a crowd of 38,202 Sunday to Yankee Stadium. An overwhelming blue-clad, pro-Chelsea base made Yankee Stadium feel a bit like home for the Blues, with six sections of loud supporters behind the first-base dugout.

"It's very good to see how this club has grown globally and has a great following," manager Roberto Di Matteo said. "The Yankee Stadium crowd, it was like a home game for us."

The MLS All-Stars certainly don't have the chemistry - developed over 72 hours or so - that a championship team like Chelsea can boast. Plus, D.C. United coach Ben Olsen has to find a way to get the stars back on track after a 4-0 loss last season.

"After talking to every coach and every agent, that almost becomes the toughest part of the deal, trying to make everybody happy," Olsen said. "But I think we've found a pretty good balance. It's worked out where we can get everybody a significant amount of playing time.

"It's not an easy process."

Henry, who plays for the New York Red Bulls, knows all about the premier competition in England. He is Arsenal's career leading scorer and would never rule out a return to his former team.

"Eventually, I'd like to go back to Arsenal," Henry said. "I don't know how. I'm sure that depends on me. I just want to finish my career. I would go back to England, that's for sure, with Arsenal. What? I still don't know what. Coaching does interest me, but I really don't think about it right now."

All he's thinking about is spoiling Chelsea's visit with a big MLS victory.

Tax Dodgers at Baseball Hall of Fame (7/22/12)

Todays' New York Times has an article on Tax Dodgers at the National Baseball Hall of fame. ?Colin Moynihan, Protest Gets a Pedestal Among Baseball?s Greats (NYT 7/22/12), here. ?The name Tax Dodgers may conjure up for some readers memories of prominent baseball players who have run afoul of the criminal tax law -- like Duke Snider, Pete Rose and Darryl Strawberry. ?But this take is a different one.

The team name on the jersey displayed is the "Tax Dodgers" (the uniform is reminiscent of the Brooklyn Dodgers famed uniform), but the hat displays a 1% logo. ?(There is a picture of the jersey and the hat with the article.)

Thus, the Tax Dodger concept is a political statement connected with the Occupy Wall Street movement:

The items, which were donated by a satirical street theater group tied to Occupy Wall Street, have been included in the Hall of Fame Museum not because of their political content but because they reflect baseball?s prominent place in the national landscape, said Tom Shieber, senior curator at the museum.?
* * * *?
The idea to form the Tax Dodgers came early in 2012. A group of Occupy Wall Street activists formed a street theater group to satirize people and companies that use lobbying or loopholes to lower the amount of taxes they pay or to eliminate payments altogether.?
The group roamed through Midtown Manhattan on tax day, April 17, swinging baseball bats and singing about economic deception to the tune of ?Take Me Out to the Ball Game.? They visited the Eighth Avenue post office where last-minute filers were standing in line, said Gan Golan, a member of the group, and brought a giant cardboard baseball mitt, emblazoned with the word ?Mitt,? to a Romney fund-raiser at the Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue.

A gunman wearing a gas mask set off an unknown gas and fired into a crowded movie theater at a midnight opening of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," killing at least 12 people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said. (AP Photo/Barry Gutierrez)

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? For the six friends, the movie was to be the kickoff to a day of celebration. Megan Saunders was turning 20, and her best buds were home from college for the summer. She had one particular birthday wish: that they all hit the midnight premiere of the new Batman flick, "The Dark Knight Rises."

Inside theater No. 9 of the Century 16 complex in Aurora, the atmosphere couldn't have been more festive. Little boys had donned their Batman masks while others were clad in full-on Caped Crusader costume. A woman near the front was dressed as Catwoman. When the lights dimmed at 12:05 a.m., a cheer went up as the previews began, followed by an even bigger shout when Bruce Wayne appeared on the big screen.

Megan and her friends sat side-by-side in the fourth row from the front, engrossed in a movie they'd long anticipated, about a superhero facing down evil.

Then an emergency exit door burst open, and suddenly evil was no longer the stuff of comic books and summer blockbusters.

The man stood only feet from them, clad in black, wearing goggles and a gas mask, holding a hissing canister in one hand, a gun in the other. For an instant Megan thought maybe he was a SWAT team member. Next to her, 19-year-olds Emma Goos and Hannah Judson thought it was all just part of the show, some extra theatrics to help set the mood.

It would take only seconds for these childhood friends to realize the horror that was about to unfold.

The man in black lobbed the canister into the crowd. As smoke spewed into the darkness, he fired one shot at the ceiling. Then, he started up the aisle.

Megan and her friends hit the floor as people all around them began screaming. "Get down!" ''There's a gun!" ''Get out!"

In the dark, crouched in front of her seat, her boyfriend trying to shield her, Megan heard the boom of the gun. Again and again and again. She stole one quick look at the audience, and saw people falling over their seats. A thought slowly began to creep into her mind: "I don't want my friends to die on my birthday."

___

Aurora lies just 10 miles east of downtown Denver, a diverse city of more than 300,000 known for world-class medical centers and its residents' affinity for sports and the outdoors. Like any big city, it has its share of crime but had, as recently as 2011, been ranked by Forbes Magazine as the ninth-safest city in America.

Megan Saunders, Emma Goos and Hannah Judson knew it only as home.

They grew up together, Megan and Emma only three doors apart in a neighborhood just down the street from the shopping mall that houses the Century 16 movie complex. At night, from Emma's front yard, you could see the red, purple and green neon lights of the theater glowing at night.

Movies were their thing. The group would often go to midnight premieres, even after they graduated high school and went their separate ways to college ? Megan to study hospitality; Emma, philosophy, math and literature; and Hannah, an aspiring music teacher, the romance language of Italian.

Together again in Aurora for summer break, it was a given that the Batman premiere would be on their must-see list. Megan was a big fan, and the premiere just happened to coincide with her birthday. So the plan was hatched: Catch the midnight show, then grab some sleep and breakfast before continuing the birthday party with a day of ice-block "sledding" in the park.

Around 11:30 p.m., six of them headed to the theater: The three girls along with friends Omar Esparza, Terrell Wallin and Megan's boyfriend of 2? years, Isaiah Bow. Emma sneaked in the candy bars. Hannah got her usual concession stand favorite, a double scoop of mint chip and fudge ice-cream, and they entered an already packed theater, seeing other friends amid the crowd. With most of the seats up top filled, the group headed toward the front and found six seats together on the righthand side of the theater, four rows from the exit door.

"It was a completely conventional night," Emma would later recall, "up until 15 minutes into the show."

On the screen, the Catwoman character played by actress Anne Hathaway had just been introduced. She had stolen some pearls.

In the theater, alleged gunman James Eagan Holmes had just kicked open the exit door. He was making his way up the aisle, shooting person after person.

___

Two rows in front of Megan and her friends, 22-year-old Jennifer Seeger, studying to become a firefighter-paramedic, felt bullet cases falling on her head, burning her skin. Behind her people moaned and pleaded, "Please don't shoot me."

In the upper section of the theater, 41-year-old Marcus Weaver, a father of two, heard children crying for their mothers and parents frantically crying, "Where are you at?" All the while the gunshots kept coming. "It was just, 'POW. POW,'" said Weaver. "All you saw was the light (of the gunflash) between the smoke. Then 'POW. POW.'"

From the ground in row 4, Megan and Emma heard a round of 20 to 25 shots. Then, for an instant ? maybe 15 seconds ? the firing stopped and an eery silence fell over the theater.

They figured the gunman was reloading. This might be their chance.

Emma stood up to run but slipped on butter that had spilled from a popcorn bucket. Still, she knew, "If I paused for one second, he would see me and shoot me." She scrambled back up and, with her head tucked down, made for the theater lobby. When she finally looked back, her friends were nowhere to be found.

Megan's boyfriend, Isaiah, had already jumped over the seats and made his escape through the emergency exit door, figuring Megan and their friends were close behind. But before Megan could get out, she saw the gunman turn to look at Isaiah. She hit the floor once more, as the shooting began all over again.

She knew she had no choice. It was either run and risk being seen, or stay and risk being slaughtered. Screaming at the strangers beside her to "Go! Go!" Megan made for the very same door the suspect had first entered, praying Isaiah would be on the other side waiting for her. Instead, he had disappeared.

They had gone to the movies ? all of them, as we all do ? for a night of escape. To forget, for just a moment, the troubles of life. Instead, in the chaos that followed, Emma and Megan, and so many others, saw things and did things that they may never forget.

Alone in the parking lot in front of the theater, Emma came across a man begging for help. His face was covered in blood. He kept asking her: "Is there a hole in my head?" She saw tissue protruding from the skin above his eye, but told him as calmly as she could manage: "You're OK. It's OK." She urged him to take off his shirt and apply pressure to the wound. Then she got on her cell phone and called her mother and stepfather.

Megan's boyfriend, Isaiah, had run back into the building in a desperate search for his girlfriend. But he was disoriented and wound up in the wrong screening room. So he shouted to the movie-goers there to get out.

As Megan made her way back to the front of the theater, casualties covered in blood stumbled out of the building. Police were starting to arrive, turning the parking lot into a makeshift triage center. Soon ambulances and gurneys piled with bodies were everywhere. Bloodied T-shirts that became makeshift tourniquets littered the ground.

Somehow, in the midst of it all, Megan found Emma. Then, from a distance, she spotted Isaiah shouting into the crowd. She ran until she could jump into his arms. Her friend Terrell had stayed close behind her. The four of them were together again, and soon they found Emma's parents, who had rushed to the scene.

But where was Omar? Where was Hannah?

Emma couldn't help but think that her friends were likely dead. What were the chances of all of them making it out of there alive? Then her stepfather's cell phone rang.

Hannah and Omar had managed to escape through the lobby and ran, barefoot, all the way back to Emma's house.

"They're OK," her stepfather told the group. All they could do was scream, this time not in terror but relief.

The comparisons came quickly between the massacre in Aurora and one 13 years ago a mere 18 miles away ? at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. When her daughter first called, Emma's mother, Judy Goos, immediately thought, "This is another Dylan Klebold. Someone who's angry at the world," said Goos, referring to one of the two students who killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves in what had been the deadliest shooting in Colorado history.

In Friday morning's rampage in Aurora, 12 people died and 58 others were injured. The suspect, 24-year-old Holmes, was arrested outside the theater and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

For so many here and across the nation, these types of tragedies have become all too common now, the images of victims covered in blood too horribly familiar. They have been far too frequent these past years, events so horrific they are recalled with only a word or two: Columbine. Virginia Tech. Fort Hood. Tucson. And, now, Aurora.

There will be, as there always are, questions about society's role, about our gun laws, about how it all might have been prevented ? and if, or when, it could happen again.

Said Aurora resident Mark Rosenberg, who stood outside of the theater Friday afternoon with his son, Nathan: "It's an unstable world. You never know what's going to happen next." His 13-year-old had gone to the midnight Batman movie at another theater, and said: "It's sad that we can't go into the theaters and feel safe."

Megan and Emma and Hannah and their friends, for now, take a somewhat different view.

They saw the worst of mankind in that theater Friday morning. But they also saw the best of it: People giving strangers CPR. Moviegoers, even some who had been wounded, refusing to flee the theater without helping their neighbors out, too.

They saw horror, but also heroes.

"There are bad apples in every batch," said Hannah. "But for the most part, I've seen nothing but support. People just trying to help people. There were people that were running and then strangers came and picked them up and took them in their car. There was so much unity in our community that I can't think that the bad is so prevalent in our world. I just can't because of one incident. And if it is ... then it's a scary place to live in."

As Emma said later: "You have to see good when you're this lucky. Six people? What are the chances of us being this close (to dying) and being OK?"

When night finally fell, the six friends found themselves at Megan's house, ending the day the way it had begun. Together.

As some peeled off and went home, Hannah and Isaiah stayed behind to do what they'd always intended: commemorate Megan's birthday. They ate muffins instead of cake and she opened one of her gifts: a movie, "Muppet Treasure Island." They sat together, watching cartoons and celebrating, in their own quiet way, life.
