Blinded sailor swims to gold in first Paralympic race

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

Less than a year after losing his eyes in a battlefield explosion, Navy Lt. Brad Snyder?on Friday?felt the wall, heard the cheers and tasted gold, beating the world?s best blind swimmers in the 100-meter freestyle final at the London Paralympics.

In a race only the Aquatics Centre spectators (and none of the eight competitors) could see, Snyder, a former Naval Academy swimmer and an ex-Navy bomb defuser, posted a winning time of 57.43 seconds. He finished more than one second faster than China?s Bozun Yang, who took silver.

?It was my first final, it was my first medal," Snyder said after the race. "It?s an immense amount of relief. There was a lot of uncertainty this morning as to whether I?d be fast or not, a lot of uncertainty whether I?d be able to come in front of this crowd and keep my wits about me and keep a good race plan. We succeeded on both counts today, came out of the gates with a gold medal and now I?m looking forward to maintaining that as much as possible throughout the week."

Earlier in the day, during his qualifying heat for the 100-meter free, Snyder set a new Paralympic record of 57.18 seconds ? more than a half second faster than his previous personal best (which already was the No. 1-ranked time in the world.)

?I have six more events, some better than others, but I?m prepared by good nutrition and good rest.," he said. "As soon as we?re done here we?ll head back, grab some dinner, go to sleep and kinda just get into this rhythm of competition ? swimming each morning, swimming each evening???and see if we can keep that performance at a high level.?

Before today?s races, Snyder said his busy London swim schedule shapes up perfectly for potential success.

?I?m actually really excited to have one of the preferred events up first, so I have something I?m targeting and feeling good about and looking forward to,? said Snyder, who lives in Baltimore. ?Hopefully, I'll get the butterflies out in prelims and then be ready to rock at night.?

Lt. Brad Snyder lost his sight in an IED explosion in Afghanistan last year. The Navy officer will once again represent the U.S., this time at the London 2012 Paralympics in September.

During a patrol last Sept. 7 in Afghanistan, Snyder was rushing forward to help two Afghan soldiers wounded in an initial IED blast. While sprinting, Snyder tripped a second hidden bomb in a farm-field irrigation ditch. His eyes were irreparably damaged by the detonation and later were removed by a surgeon.

Entering the London Paralympics, Snyder trained for months with his coach, Brian Loeffler, to shave split seconds off the world No. 1 times he already had set this year in three freestyle events ? the 50 meters, 100 meters and 400 meters.

But trying to cut through the water more quickly caused Snyder to crash hard into the lane lines during some of those practice sessions.

Lt. Brad Snyder, blinded by an IED explosion in Afghanistan, trained hard for the London 2012 Paralympics.

?I started wearing compression sleeves in practice because I started beating my arms up pretty bad,? Snyder said before Friday?s race.

?We?ve put a lot of emphasis on quality. I?ve put a lot of work into just being as symmetrical as possible and really working on a quality stroke and trying to find ways to maintain good technique ... That way we can avoid crashing and losing speed due to fatigue.

?I?ve been doing a lot of kick and strength work to hopefully be able to control the speed of the sprint with my legs as opposed to trying to do it with my arms which I think lends to me crashing.?

Centra "Ce-Ce" Mazyck, who was paralyzed during a parachute jump with the 82 Airborne in November 2003, will compete in the javelin at the London Paralympics. "This is my second chance," she tells NBC News' Jamieson Lesko.

Like all blind Paralympic swimmers, Snyder competes while wearing blacked-out goggles ??a Paralympic rule to ensure no athlete in the field can see even a glimmer of light. He also relies on Loeffler, the swimming coach at Loyola University, to stand at the end of his lanes and tap him on the shoulders with a walking cane to alert him that a flip turn or finishing kick is needed.

The 100-meter free was the first of seven events Snyder will swim in London. Depending how well Snyder performs in his preliminary heats, he could race 14 times in nine days.

?It?s spread across so many days. And there?s one event per day. And my coach and I have strategy on that: it behooves me to use the opportunities to race just to get accustomed to the pool, the setup, the sound of the start, and walking around," Snyder said. ?If I can make finals in an off event then it gives me the opportunity to go through the ready-room system.

?It actually works out great to just kind of make the extraordinary ordinary. Just get accustomed to being in front of the people, hearing the noise, hopping in the pool and racing.??

Some of the hottest tickets at the London Paralympics are for wheelchair rugby. The sport is so violent and fierce, that it has been dubbed "Murderball". ITN's Lewis Vaughan Jones met Team Great Britain's inspirational captain.

King: Letting Japan in trade zone could cost U.S. jobs

United Auto Workers President Bob King on Thursday said he strongly opposes entry of Japan into nine-nation free trade talks, saying it could put American jobs at risk.

The Obama administration has been considering whether to allow Japan in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and has already approved Mexico and Canada in joining the talks.

The talks are aimed at creating one of the world's largest free-trade zones, including some of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

"We could not be stronger in advocating that Japan should not be in," King said in an interview, adding there is "no realistic way to open up the markets in Japan."

While King acknowledged the "geopolitical considerations" in letting Japan take part, he argues the deal could hurt U.S. workers.

"We don't see any way that you can have fair trade with Japan because of all of the nontariff barriers, Japanese culture, tight integration of the government policies and the companies," he said.

Emphasizing the difficulties of opening the market and fair trade with Japan, King said bluntly: "I don't see that happening in my lifetime."

King's comments came after a study released last week by the Ann Arbor-based Center for Automotive Research argued that allowing Japan to take part in the talks could dramatically boost Japanese automotive exports to the United States, and cost more than 26,000 American jobs. U.S. automakers are sharply opposed to allowing Japan into the partnership talks. A free-trade agreement could drop tariffs on Japanese vehicles entering the United States and make it more economically viable to build cars and trucks in Japan and export them to the U.S.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk has said the administration has made no decision on whether to allow Japan to take part.

Plan to rework L.A. trash hauling moves to City Council

A controversial plan to carve the city of Los Angeles into 11 new and exclusive commercial trash hauling franchise areas was approved unanimously by two City Council committees Wednesday.

The matter now goes to the full council for a vote despite objections from some business interests and apartment owners, as well as the city's top budget guru, Chief Administrative Officer Miguel Santana.

The plan is backed by a powerful coalition of labor and environmental groups, who say it will boost recycling, reduce truck traffic, and improve working conditions in a hazardous industry. The city's sanitation department also backs the plan.

Hillary Gordon of the Sierra Club was one of a number of environmentalists who spoke during a 41/2- hour hearing and hailed the franchise plan as "absolutely better for the environment."

Maria Elena Durazo, who heads the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, said the exclusive system would also be better for workers. "We have health and safety laws now, but they are abused daily by the waste and recycling industry," she said.

Many trash companies and business interests spoke against exclusive franchises, saying the city could achieve the same recycling and environmental goals while maintaining a more competitive trash hauling market. Some also have asserted that exclusive franchises are a gambit by organized labor to represent more refuse workers.

The city picks up trash from single-family homes and small apartment buildings. But privatized trash hauling for large apartment buildings, factories and businesses involves about 150 companies whose trucks crisscross the city. The firms collect about $224 million a year in Los Angeles.

"Competition is what drives the solid waste industry in Los Angeles," said Ron Saldana, head of the Los Angeles County Disposal Assn. "Kill it and you will be dependent on moving forward ? with a new, inefficient bureaucracy."

Speakers on both sides of the issue said the current commercial trash system needs improvement.

Santana, the city's CAO, has backed a retooled, non-exclusive plan, saying it could produce similar benefits and provide the cash-strapped city up to $30 million as soon as next year.

But at a joint session, six council members on the ad hoc waste and environmental committees disagreed, after hearing lengthy comments on the trash-hauling needs of movie studios, practices of other cities and how the city can meet a 2025 goal of recycling up to 90% of its waste.

Councilman Paul Koretz said creating better regulated, exclusive franchise territories would set a standard that the rest of the country can emulate. Council members Richard Alarcon, Jose Huizar, Paul Krekorian and Dennis Zine agreed.

Council member Tony Cardenas asked for a "minority report" suggesting the full council also consider a non-exclusive franchise system. It is "disingenuous to approve an exclusive franchise model on the false premise that it is the only way to achieve high environmental standards," he said in a statement.

Sex and Love Songs | Addiction Treatment Blog by Addiction Experts

?

When I listen to the radio or even my own music, certain songs trigger my sex and love addiction.? It is not necessarily that these songs immediately make me want to act out and get close to someone in a hastily and malformed manner, but it generally does create a sense of unfulfilled desire or emptiness.? It triggers the thought that I, as I am, alone, am not good enough.? Good enough for what?? Sometimes it is happiness, to be loved, to have sex with, to form a relationship with, or to get fulfillment in life.? I start reminiscing on my past sexual and romantic engagements only to glorify and idealize them, forgetting all of the heartbreak, anxiety, discontent, dangerous situations, and health risks that came with it.

Maybe, all of this sounds peculiar, because a song is just a song.? Up until a point that is true?the radio was just a radio?but as I began to take inventory and look back on my own patterns, I saw exactly how the songs build on top of each other to build this sexualized notion of ?normal? life.? The lyrics discuss what ?most? people find important or how ?most? people live.? Obviously, when we think objectively, that is not likely the case.? Many people live fulfilled lives with a single or small number of sexual partners across a lifespan.? Other individuals find fulfillment without romantic lovers beside them for the majority of their lives. ?More importantly, many people find fulfillment that is not dependent upon their romantic or sexual ties.? Yet, when I listen to these songs, I get carried away with my own fears that lead me to act out.? Let?s just take a look at a few of the hits.

Adele?s ?Rumor Has It? features a story in which Adele is jealous and seemingly trying to get a man back who has moved on to another, younger woman, but ultimately Adele asserts her power by saying that she is moving on, even though she hears that he still wants her.? I?m not saying that this necessarily is over the top with its lyrics, but, for me, the heavy emphasis on emotional connection to the relationship and the separation triggers me to go back and rehash my recent relationships and intimacies.? Did I reflect that strength?? Would I be the man or Adele?

?Whistle? by Flo Rida asks an assumed girl listener to put her ?lips together and come real close? so that she ?can?blow [his] whistle baby.?? His loaded innuendos and generally degrading and assumptive lyrics are, in a way, nauseating, but simultaneously they remind me of my less favorable sexual experiences and start me on an unpleasant tailspin about how hopeless my quest for love and good sex found in one individual seems.

The next obnoxious trigger song would be ?Call Me Maybe? by Carly Rae Jepsen.? As described in some of the characteristics of sex and love addicts read at most 12-step meetings for the issue, the lyrics discuss a sudden emotional attachment to an individual whom the singer barely (or simply doesn?t) know.? She randomly meets someone, falls for him based on appearance in an intuitive and likely instinctual and superficial leap, and hits on him in a clearly sexual and romantic way: ?Hey, I just met you and this is crazy, but here?s my number, so call me maybe??? She says that she ?took no time with the fall.?? Culturally that fall would imply falling in love, but they just met, so let?s be honest: she fell in lust.? The dude is hot.? Well, random sex can be fun.? Hitting on a stranger comes with its risks of danger, rejection, and absolutely amazing sex with no emotional attachment?and that gets me thinking a lot.

?Somebody that I Used to Know? by Gotye simply messes with my head.? I think about the people whom I truly loved romantically and had sex with.? After we were bonded, I always did something to ruin the relationship that was linked with sex.? I was too focused, cheating, degrading, and generally disrespectful when it came to sex, and then, inevitably, the relationship fell apart, and I hurt the people so badly that they did not want to talk to me anymore.? This song triggers the shame and sadness about what I have lost, and makes me feel like I will never find love again ? and, if I do, I wouldn?t be worthy of it.

There are always the sex-themed classics that I hold onto and avoid like hell: Ludacris?s ?What?s Your Fantasy,? Khia?s ?My Neck, My Back,? Akinyele?s ?Put it in My Mouth,? Buckcherry?s ?Crazy Bitch,? and Rufus Wainwright?s ?Instant Pleasure.?? They?re explicit and seductive, reflecting the mentality necessary for a life of vain and vulgar random sexual affairs, the accumulation of needless sexually transmitted diseases, and an ever-fading sense of fulfillment and purpose.? Each song creates an image in my head almost immediately.

Maybe songs like these aren?t a trigger for every sex-and-love-addict and are perfectly healthy for the non- sex-and-love-addict to listen to, but with my head they are a danger that can quickly cause a dissent into dangerous thought spirals and desires that can only lead to negative emotions and acting out if I don?t take steps to regain perspective.

How Switching to VoIP Can Save You Money

We are a truly global society and communicate with dozens of people on a daily basis, not just locally but globally as well. Long distance communication can get very difficult as it is often of poor quality and the connection often gets disrupted or lost. Sending different data such as images and sound can be very costly, even if just done locally. Luckily by switching to VoIP, this can be solved.

The Problem

Low quality communication and slow connections can be quite costly, especially if you want to have more personal conversations over your phone though video. Sending a large amount of data such as images with sound is very expensive and often also ineffective as the signal is poor and the picture and sound quality is low.

Slow connections can cost you money, as the lengthy time it takes can be expensive and it can also create miscommunication which can cause problems. These problems often take the spending of more money to solve. This is especially true if you are a business and do communication and transactions on a global scale as effective communication is key to earning money and selling your product or services.

The Solution

VoIP uses innovative new technology to help resolve the many problems of standard communication. Through the use of the internet it creates clear signals and allows the effective sending of images, sound and data, both locally and all over the world. This use of the internet combined with good quality technology creates a dramatic decrease in the cost of communications. It gives you the ability to have meaningful conversations with people anywhere in the world as easily as making a phone call.

No longer is there a concern that video chatting and the sending of dynamic information anywhere in the world will result in high costs. This technology also allows you more freedom. For businesses, it lowers costs and allows them to have more meaningful and effective communication, which can actually also help them make money.

Saving Money

The ability to send any amount of data whether it is video, sound or other information anywhere in the world is a great advantage. Being able to do this without having to pay high costs is even better. Regardless if you are a business owner or just want to be able to communicate for personal reasons, this technology will save you money. In global as well as local communications, VoIP is truly innovative in reducing the costs of effective communication.

THE RACE: Long hard road to GOP nomination ending

The road to the GOP presidential nomination has been long and winding.

But it was ending Tuesday as delegates formally nominate former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to challenge President Barack Obama.

It's hard to remember that little over a year ago, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann won the Iowa straw poll and appeared to cement her status as the Iowa frontrunner.

But a rotation of frontrunners followed until Romney finally clinched the nomination in the spring and began working to unify a fragmented party.

If the Tampa gathering was the end of one road, it was also a busy intersection where prospective future party leaders and candidates crossed paths with those from the past.

On the hurricane-shortened convention's first full day, Ann Romney was offering a personal, close-up look at her husband while rising GOP star New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was delivering the keynote address.

"This has basically got to be a 20-minute version of the Gettysburg Address or I'm in trouble," Christie joked beforehand.

Rick Santorum, Romney's last serious challenger, had a speaking role, as did Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. John McCain, the 2008 nominee.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and wife Callista had a brief speaking slot Thursday.

Ron Paul was not among the speakers ? his choice, he said ? nor were Bachmann, Herman Cain or Texas Gov. Rick Perry. But Bachmann and Cain posed for a photo at the convention center.

The caption? "We ain't mad. We support Mitt and Ryan," Cain joked.

Obama mixed campaigning in Iowa and Colorado with warning Gulf Coast residents to heed local authorities as Hurricane Isaac neared land.

"When disaster strikes, we're not Democrats or Republicans first, we are Americans first," he said at Iowa State University.

Poor auto sales see tax figures spin out | SaigonMoney.com - The ...

Plummeting auto sales and imports have smashed tax figures.

The Customs Department in Haiphong port city was assigned to raise VND53.2 trillion ($2.53 billion) worth in taxes this year, with VND47.2 trillion ($2.24 billion) coming from Haiphong area alone.

However, the first seven months witnessed just 35 per cent of the assigned figure.

Haiphong area?s completely built unit (CBU) car import value shed 74 per cent on-year, falling to $155 million, making cars the item with most sinking import figures among the city?s top 10 items in import value and tax collection each year.

The import value of auto parts via Haiphong also slid 30 per cent on-year to $80 million.

Sharply declining CBU car imports took a hit on value added tax and import duty collections in Haiphong. The city?s Customs Department figures show that 74 per cent sinking auto import value was tantamount to VND7.8 trillion ($371 million) tax loss out of approximately VND9 trillion ($428 million) total declined tax amount.

In fact, Haiphong port city is one of five venues with permission to import CBU cars together with Cai Lan in Quang Ninh province, Danang, Ho Chi Minh City and southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

Dwindling car consumption led to decreasing budget collections in many localities. In its first six month report, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) revealed car ownership fee collection just met 33.2 per cent of the projection and fell 29.7 per cent on-year.

Besides, the state coffers saw a decline of nearly 13 trillion ($619 million) resulting from sliding CBU car imports and VND1.5 trillion ($71.4 million) from sagging auto component imports on-year.

The MoF also reported 38 localities across the countries failed to reach budget revenue targets in the first half. For instance, Vinh Phuc just attained 36 per cent tax collections from domestic sources against the projection.

With a sales volume of 30,000 car units in 2011, Toyota Vietnam paid around VND16 trillion ($761 million) to Vinh Phuc provincial budget. Its sale volume fell to just 11,000 units in 2012?s first half, casting a dent of around VND1 trillion ($47 million) to the provincial budget.

In 2011, the tax collection from GM Vietnam was VND507 billion ($24 million) and from Ford Vietnam VND88 billion ($4 million) lower than projections on the back of sinking production and business, according to MoF.

In the first seven months of 2012, Vietnam imported around 16,000 CBU cars worth over VND330 million, down 57 per cent on-year, according to MoF statistics.

Car sales volume in the domestic market also dropped 39 per cent on-year.

Help Your Home With Some Home Improvement | Marijuana for MRSA

Instead of purchasing white towels for your bathroom, choose darker colors or patterns. White is a color that picks up everything and needs constant bleaching. You can choose to have your fingertip towels and washcloths to be one color and your actual bath towels to be a different color altogether. It saves a lot of trouble when washing and makes your bathroom appear a lot cleaner and put together.

Home improvement costs often skyrocket when homeowners fail to take un-livability into consideration when scheduling an intensive remodel. If you can?t cook in your kitchen or bath in your bathroom, you will end up eating out a lot and possibly staying in a hotel for a few nights. These costs add up quickly if you weren?t expecting them. Add another line to your budget for food and lodging if necessary.

Choosing to use wooden flooring instead of carpeting can save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Carpet can contain allergens and cleaning it is sometimes out of the question. The cost of ripping up and replacing your carpet can almost be as costly as just putting down wooden flooring. Wooden floors can be refinished and repainted as needed; also providing a more rural and cottage style environment.

In northern climates where heavy snow covers the ground all winter, you may lose track of where the borders of pathways are. To avoid this it is a good idea to put a 4? X 4? lumber bordering the paths. Then, when you are shoveling snow, you will know exactly where the edge of the path should be.

If you do not already have one, add a second bathroom to your home. The main reason for this is so your family does not have to fight over one bathroom. Another reason for adding another bathroom is for resale value. Having two bathrooms makes a home more attractive for potential buyers.

If you want your house to be inviting, then you may want to go outside and see what others see. An attractive yard is a good place to start. Choose landscaping that is easy to care for, but beautiful at the same time. Also, check out your decks and patios to see if they can be spruced up with a good cleaning, staining or even furniture can up the attractiveness of these areas.

Make sure you understand every single step of a project before you decide to start working on it. Sometimes something that seems very simple may actually be quite difficult. The opposite is also true at times, so be sure to make a detailed, step by step, blueprint before you start really working.

When it comes to home improvement, be sure to have fun with it. This is important because it should be a rewarding experience for you. You will never fully enjoy your home improvement project if it was a burden and brings back bad memories. Consider hiring help if it is expected that you will run into issues completing the project on your own.

Home improvement projects that involve changes to the plumbing can sometimes take unexpectedly longer. There are many instances where plumbing changes may require an extensive re-routing that was not identified during the planning phases. You can however plan for these uncertainties ahead of time by purchasing drinking water and making arrangements with neighbors to use their showers and toilets.

Choose the water heater that you need for your home. They are designed to provide the amount of hot water that a family of different sizes will need. It is labeled right on the box whether it is a water heater for a family of one, two, five or whatever number of people it will keep supplied with hot water.

If you have an in-ground or above-ground swimming pool, invest the extra money to build a secure, gated fence around the perimeter of the pool. This will increase the value of your home, but its most important function is to prevent children or pets from wandering too close to the pool and risking accidental falls or drowning.

To make the roof on your real estate last as long as possible you should make sure there are power vents installed to draw hot air out of the attic space. This will keep the underside of the roof cooled down so that it does not cook your shingles the way a frying pan cooks and egg.

An inexpensive way to improve the appearance of your home?s interior is by replacing your curtains. Old and worn-out curtains will make your home look dated and worn-out too. New curtains will brighten up a room and can be had from discount stores at a fairly minimal cost to you.

Remember to account for debris. When you are planning a large home improvement project ? especially one involving demolition ? it is easy to forget about the large amount of debris that is generated. All of that garbage and old material will have to go somewhere, and most people would rather not have it piled up around their home. Consider a large tarp in the backyard to protect the lawn, or rent a dumpster to have hauled away on a designated date.

Home improvement work does not have to be difficult. By following the advice we provided above, we hope that you will find it easy to begin working on any number of projects around your house. You?ll be amazed at the results you can achieve, once you get started!

NNU Director RoseAnn DeMoro Named to Top 100 Most Influential ...

DeMoro Only Advocate for Nurses, Labor on National List

Silver Spring, Maryland--(ENEWSPSF)--August 28, 2012. ?National Nurses United Executive Director RoseAnn DeMoro has won national recognition once again as one of the ?100 Most Influential People in Healthcare? ? the only advocate for nurses or other working people on a list published annually by Modern Healthcare, a prominent national healthcare industry publication.

DeMoro, who is number 36 on the list of 100, is one of only eight people to be named to the list for each of the 11 years it has been compiled. She is also one of only two women to be named every year on a list that is dominated by figures in government and corporate healthcare institutions.

See the full report.

"We are incredibly proud to see RoseAnn recognized and honored year after year for both her outstanding leadership and accomplishments and the historic achievements by our national nurses? movement and organization,? said NNU Co-President Jean Ross, RN.

RoseAnn DeMoro

RoseAnn DeMoro with NNU leaders

At a time when Medicare has become a major issue in the Presidential campaign, including a proposal by the Republican candidates to privatize Medicare, DeMoro and NNU have been in the forefront of national efforts to best protect Medicare by expanding it to cover everyone, a point emphasized in Modern Healthcare?s report on the Top 100.

As the Supreme Court was deliberating the fate of the Affordable Care Act, Modern Healthcare noted, NNU was continuing to talk to patients across the country who still face the effects of a broken healthcare system in need of more expansive reform, as in Medicare for all.

?The stories are heartbreaking,? DeMoro told Modern Healthcare, citing just one example of an instance where a woman having a heart attack was prepared to die rather than call an ambulance because she was afraid that, if she went to the hospital, she would lose her home and her son would have no place to live.

In the past year, NNU has also been leading efforts for a tax on Wall Street speculation, also known as the Robin Hood tax,? that could raise hundreds of billions of dollars annually to help fund economic revitalization with funds for healthcare, jobs, education, and other basics.

As a recent editorial in the Chicago Gazette, a city where NNU sponsored a major march and rally for the Wall Street tax in May noted,

?Economists and progressive political leaders worldwide have been discussing the Financial Transaction Tax, popularly known as the Robin Hood Tax, for a few years, but it took a group of protesting nurses who are members of National Nurses United wearing Robin Hood hats to bring it to the attention of Chicago.?

?Why nurses? They know the money raised could affect them and their patients directly (by paying for healthcare across the country) and indirectly (by creating jobs, cutting student debt, covering mortgage foreclosures).?

Since the NNU was founded in December 2009, from the affiliation of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, former United American Nurses, and the Massachusetts Nurses Association, NNU has been one of the fastest-growing labor organizations in the U.S. winning elections for 13,000 RNs at 30 hospitals in 10 states Today NNU represents more than 175,000 RNs.

Nicaragua probes drug network of fake journalists

(AP) ? Nicaraguan authorities are investigating what they call a vast network of drug criminals behind a seizure of $9.2 million in vans driven by people pretending to be part of a Mexican television news crew.

National Police's spokesman Fernando Borge says the destination of the money for which 18 people have been detained was Costa Rica. He says it was a payment for a load of drugs.

Borge told The Associated Press Monday that a former police agent heard in Honduras a conversation from those now detained of their plans to drive through Nicaragua with the money. He said the man alerted authorities in Managua.

Initially, authorities had said they found $7 million in smuggled cash, but on Monday they said it was more money than they first thought.

How the Apple v. Samsung Outcome Could Change in the Coming Weeks

Jurors delivered a whopping blow to Samsung on Friday in their verdict for Apple v. Samsung -- to the tune of $1.05 billion. But right away, we can expect the court system to tweak some of the jury's findings, possibly by increasing the damages that Samsung owes Apple.

Your Boss Is Your Master, New Gadgets and a Carnival - Wealth ...

handshake business man person 267x300 Your Boss Is Your Master, New Gadgets and a Carnival

I?ll be happy to sign your paycheck- as long as you do whatever I say. Deal?

Literally. I was looking at the etymology of the word Boss, which apparently is derived from the words Baas or Baes both of which mean master or overlord. From what I hear from some people, it doesn?t sound too far off. If you love your job, feel fortunate.

I figured I would start the week out with a little etymology lesson to help put things into perspective.

New Gadgets!

I picked up an iPod touch that I?ve been playing around with. I?ve successfully turned it into a WiFi phone and I?m seeing some of the other things I can do with it.

Below are some tweets that I sent out from the iPod over the past couple of days. I?m exploring all of the different things I can do with it, but so far I?m really impressed.

In case you missed last week, I posted an article discussing?grants for entrepreneurs, and?5 funny jobs I wish existed. Now, onto the tweets and the carnival.

Guest Blog: Top 10 Rules for Dating Pro Athletes |

By Amy

Lots of chicks out there chase athletes around?.puck bunnies, cleat chasers, jersey chasers, whatever you want to call it. It would be pretty cool to have a talented, hot, rich husband- get to be in the spotlight, a status symbol?it makes sense why women dream of marrying these types of guys. But the reality of the situation can be much different. Relationships are complicated as it is, but when you throw in a high-stress, high-stakes, high-profile job like being a professional athlete, it can make things a bit more complicated. Look at a sports calendar. It is FULL of games. There is no doubt that your relationship is going to be long distance part time, if not almost full time. If he plays in a different city, it will be 100% full time long distance. That can take its toll on anyone. Anyone who has ever been in a long distance relationship knows what I?m talking about. I have been dating an athlete for a while now, and I learned pretty fast what I need to do to keep the relationship alive on my end, and what I should expect of him on his end.

Rule One:?Be patient

I cannot stress this enough. Your guy?s schedule is going to be WAY busy. And when he has off time, he?s going to want to just chill, sleep, or hang out with his buddies. You will not always hear from him, and he will not always respond to your texts. Granted, some guys are better at responding to texts than others, and I?m just making a generalization here ? busy guys will not respond to you. It doesn?t mean he doesn?t care, it just means he?s busy, and you have to understand this. You also have to understand that if he is a minor leaguer, he has a lot more on his plate, a lot more to prove. He may not want to give up his life in his sport for you just yet, you may endure a few years of ?waiting? for him. Be patient and support him. He will REALLY appreciate that.

Rule Two:?Make sacrifices (two-way)

This rule goes both ways for both people in the relationship. If you are both committed to trying the long distance thing, or the dating-while-in-season thing, you need to both put in time. It means taking the time to call after a game. It means spending a bunch of money on a plane ticket to go visit for a weekend, or sending a care package. I am very aware that this contradicts what I said in rule one, that you have to be patient and not ?expect? his call. That is the reality of the situation. He won?t always be able to. But he should do his best to make the time.

If you?re lucky enough to have your guy play in your town, you have to be willing to sacrifice your time to go to as many games as you can, and he has to understand that you can?t make all of them, since you have a life, too.

Rule Three:?Good communication (two-way)

I have this listed as rule three, but 1 2 and 3 are all equally important. Any man that is worth your time will know for a fact that women need to know what?s going on or what?s in store. HOPEFULLY your guy will have briefed you on what he?s like when he?s in season. Maybe he has already talked about past long distance relationship failures and what went wrong. My guy told me once before his season started, ?Some girls think they can handle the long distance thing, but once reality hits, they change their minds.? That really hit home for me, since I had NO idea what I was getting into. He continued, ?you just have to be patient with me.? I wasn?t really sure what he meant by that, but he certainly was right. I learned that I am way more patient than I think. Had he not said those things, I would probably be tearing my hair out going crazy. It was a vague statement, but in hindsight it was really important. I almost decided against the distance thing, but said, ?it?s not forever, is it?? No, it?s not forever. Worth a shot.

Keep in mind that when I say ?communication,? I don?t mean specifics like ?what are you doing right now? type of communication (which is fine for idle chat). I?m talking more about the bigger picture. Where you are in the relationship, how you feel, where you think it?s going, any troubles or bumps in the road are going to happen, you have to be able to power through and solve the problems and not let them fester. Discuss things rather than arguing about them. Ask questions. Talk about possible solutions. Don?t get let emotions get in the way of problem solving.

Rule Four:?Don?t be annoying or jealous

This is a general rule that applies for anyone in any relationship. It?s hard to judge sometimes when you?re being annoying because everyone has different opinions and tolerance levels for annoying behavior. You have to keep in mind that your guy is busy doing stuff, and he doesn?t always have time to talk (rule one), so there is no need to blow up his phone or his Facebook page. You may learn pretty quickly when you are being annoying, based on his reaction to what you do. If you keep unnecessary communication to a minimum, your guy will be happy. Yes, you can send him the random ?I love you? text, but don?t overdo it. Use your best judgement.

You also have to keep in mind that your guy is in the spotlight. He may have to go places: signings, public appearances, charity appearances, sign autographs after games. He will meet people. He will meet lots of people. He will meet other girls. DO NOT (referring to rule three) get bent out of shape about this. Do not stalk his female friend additions on Facebook. If you have trust issues, DO NOT get involved in this sort of relationship. It will eat you alive. If he ends up cheating on you for whatever reason, he is a jerk and isn?t worth your time. Move on.

Rule Five:?Trust the relationship (two-way)

Another two-way rule that is VERY important. Sometimes it?s better to not know what they are doing. Let him have time ?with the guys.? Don?t give him 20 questions like where are you, who are you with, were there any girls there ? because the answers are most likely at a bar, with the guys, yes there were girls there. Unless your guy is an antisocial loner, he will go out with his teammates as often as possible. This needs to happen so don?t try to force it otherwise. You have to trust each other to stay faithful. If you do not have this, a long distance relationship is NOT for you. Or any relationship, for that matter. (To put it into perspective, there have been periods of 24 or 48 hours where I haven?t heard from my guy. Do I like it? No. Do I know he will call me or text me later? Yes. Do I text him anyway? Yes. Do I give him shit about it when he does actually call me? No.)

Rule Six:?Make decisions on your own

If you are having a rough time in life, jobs, whatever, you may not always have him there to lean on. You have to make regular life decisions on your own or with other friends (emphasis on ?regular life,? since any huge life-changing decisions should always be discussed with your guy). NEWS FLASH: most guys give zero shits about what petty small-scale decisions you make (should I get the blue dress or the black one? Should I make my pin number your birthday?), so this could probably be applied to any relationship. Guys appreciate independence. Dependency and helplessness is NOT attractive in a distance relationship.

Rule Seven:?Do not expect him to make any big decisions while in season

While your guy is in season, he probably has NO idea what?s in store for him after the season is over. It doesn?t mean he hasn?t thought about it, he just has no idea. I don?t have an excuse for them as to why, they just don?t. Don?t grill him (rule three) on what his plans are. Don?t pressure him to make decisions right now. You can certainly ask, but be prepared to accept a non-answer (rule one). If time is limited for whatever reason, use your supportive girlfriend status and motivate him to make some sort of plans for himself. Talk him through it using logical unbiased questions. Sometimes your guy needs you to give him a push. Don?t get jammed up if he initially resists. The fact that you brought it up and are encouraging him to make decisions is enough.

Rule Eight:?Get to know his sport

This is sort of self-explanatory but it can mean a lot to your guy if you follow his league or his sport in general. It can give you something to talk about and can give you a good idea about what sort of pressure he is under and what is going on in his life. If you don?t understand part of it, ask him. I still have no idea how to spot the difference between a fastball or a slider or a changeup. I understand the fundamental differences, but I don?t see it when I?m looking at it. Just looks like a ball traveling really fast. Yet I continue to ask?

Rule Nine:?Be Encouraging

Another self-explanatory rule. Your guy will have ups and downs, just like any sport season does. It is your job as Supportive Girlfriend to be there through all of it. You can?t be a fair-weather girlfriend. Your guy may shut down or get really annoyed with his team?s or his own performance. This will affect you. You can?t take it personally (rule one), you need to be there to talk to him. If he doesn?t want to talk about it, you have to accept that.? Put yourself in his shoes. Relate his experiences to some of your own experiences and how you overcame it?put it into perspective; it will help you understand it too.

Rule Ten:?It IS all about him ? to a certain degree

All of this may sound like a load of crap to some of you. Relationships ARE supposed to be 50/50, give and take, a balance of everything. In some cases, you have to shift that balance to accommodate. As a pro athlete, your guy has a more than full time job. He doesn?t have all that time to put in half the effort, make half the trips, spend half of the money. You as Supportive Girlfriend have to understand this and deal with it. Sometimes you have to bend over backwards for him, and you should be willing to do that. If you?re not able to, he should understand that. At the same time, if he doesn?t acknowledge your effort and isn?t appreciative of everything you put into the relationship, and he isn?t willing to accommodate to your life after his season is over, he is not worth your time. This is only a temporary shift of balance.

A lot of these things I said in these rules are contradictory. Saying two-way communication is important but then going back and saying you have to be ok with him not talking to you. It really doesn?t make much sense at all, I?m aware of this. There are times when its ok to accept non-communication and there are times to not. Use your best judgement.

Reflections

Every now and then you have to take a step back from the relationship and look at it objectively. Am I still happy doing this? Is this guy worth waiting around for? If he decides to play for a few more years, would I be able to do this for another season? Five more years? If he lands a big(ger) contract and has to move somewhere else, what would I do?

These types of relationships are a constant test of your mental and emotional strength. A relationship built on a good solid base of trust and communication can last, if you both do your best to keep up with it.? As for being in the spotlight on the red carpet on a player?s arm, it?s probably not going to happen. You might have a few opportunities to parade around with him for banquets or other appearances, but for the most part, you are not visible. Reality bites sometimes. Bottom line is, he is busy and you come second to his sport. You have to accept that, no questions asked. But when his season is over, it needs to be about both of you.
