I was having a Twitter conversation with @LeafWarbler about being a lone brown face in a research setting.? I told him of my adventures in field research in rural Illinois (outside of Urbana-Champaign).? I was trapping small mammals on corn fields just off of a rural road. It became common for law enforcement to show up and check me out.? For each visit, I would have to explain that I had permission to be there (provide name of land owner), who I was, what I was doing (often having to show them the animals I had in hand to prove it), and wait. Wait for the call-in and confirmation.

After so many visits, one cop eventually said he?d leave a note with dispatch so that they would stop responding to calls about me.

LeafWarbler asked if I was wearing a hoodie (when the cops arrived while I was doing research); and I laughed because, yeah, I was.

However, researchers of color who do research in the field (also outdoors men and women) have these kinds of stories to share, often.? We laugh about it, but it?s quite sad that something about ?us? ? hoodie or not, evokes such fear and suspicion.

A year and a half ago, he and my cousin were approaching my sister?s front door when the cops began questioning without cause.? They were looking for someone who stayed next door to her, but decided they looked suspicious enough and they were taken into custody immediately.? The charge: ?Standing in the street?.? No kidding, I can?t make this up.? I know my brother?s dress didn?t help convince them that he wasn?t a gang member. (He was wearing a red hoodie ? his high school colors, in a known Blood neighborhood).? But I also know that city cops are known to harass and abuse young men for no real cause.? I beat the police to the police station which was only 4 blocks away and demanded to see my brother and cousin.? They weren?t there. In fact, the dispatcher had no record of any young men being picked up in the last 30 minutes.? I quickly whipped out my ?Dr title ?and called my ACLU lawyer friend.

Within moments, my brother and cousin were returned to my sister?s house, unharmed.? Maybe things turned out fine without my intervention; but the sad fact is, this is the life of many young men ? black, brown, even white.? Something about a certain style of dress and appearance evoke suspicion in some people. And everyday, poor (inner-city) people are abused or killed by cops and vigilantes like George Zimmerman.

I?m not sure of the psychology of this madness, but Melanie Tannenbaum addresses some of these demons with her Guest Blog post Trayvon Martin?s Psychological Killer: Why We See Guns That Aren?t There.

But to me, the banter around the topic really calls to mind this notion of Brown Faces in White Places.? Dr. Caroyn Finney wrote her dissertation on African-Americans and the great outdoors which included how people of color often have negative experiences because of the reactions of authorities or other visitors.? She became aware of this notion of place as a child. She grew up? on a 13-acre estate in a wealthy white neighborhood of Mamaroneck, N.Y., where her parents worked, taking care of the grounds and house.

It was, she recalls, ?a beautiful piece of property,? with flower and vegetable gardens, a lake, and a variety of fruit trees. The owners, who were there only on weekends and holidays, lived in ?what I call the big house.?
?I remember being 9, and walking home from school,? she says. ?There were always police patrolling the neighborhood, and one day there was a new policeman on patrol. When he saw me walking home he asked, ?Where are you going?? And I said, ?Oh, around the corner,? and I gave him the address. And he said, ?Do you work there???
Even in the recounting, Finney is incredulous. ?I?m 9,? she repeats. ?I said, ?No, I live there.? And so, reflecting back, I was completely out of place.?

And I imagine that is what is happening with so many of us who do science ? in the field or industry ? or work in academia.? Somehow, no one was expecting to see this face ? this brown face or young face or female face or male face or unkempt face or this hoodie-clad face, whatever it may be.? Oftentimes, persons of authority and persons of privilege (usually one in the same) have no problem descending upon us, questioning our presence in this place. Asking, nay, demanding that we justify our presence in a place. Behave in an acquiescent manner while we are being held up and distracted from our jobs or simply minding our law-abiding business, lest we be arrested or harmed. ?And until the possibility that any kind of face could be the one doing science or teaching class or leading project or walking down the street in a gated-community with Skittles and an Ice Tea, then we?re still likely to have conversations like these in the future.

On the top panel you'll find a power button, three USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, headphone and microphone jacks, and a three-speed fan controller. A magnetic plastic cover hides the top fan vent, but can be easily adjusted or removed to improve airflow. A snapping cover also serves as a lid for a SATA-equipped hot-swappable drive bay.

On the front of the tower you'll find a Blu-ray (BD-RE) optical drive, and a 65-in-1 card reader that accommodates every major media card format, including SD/MMC, microSD, CF/MD, MS/Pro/Duo, and xD, plus another USB 2.0 port thrown in for good measure. On the back of the tower you'll find scads of connections, with six USB 2.0 ports (one of which is occupied by a Bluetooth receiver), four USB 3.0 ports, a USB BIOS flashback port, and two USB/eSATA combination ports. The Gigabit Ethernet port is your only networking option, as the Silent Gaming PC has no Wi-Fi. Display outputs include two DVI, one HDMI, and one full-size DisplayPort. There are also several audio outputs, with ports for S/PDIF and eight-channel analog audio.

Pull off the case's side panel (the thumbscrews make it easy) and you'll find that the Quiet X79 Gaming PC is equipped with both a 120GB SSD (which serves as the OS drive) and a silent 2TB Western Digital hard drive (for storage). Plugged into the Asus P9X79 motherboard is a six-core Intel Core i7-3930K processor?the same model found in both the Chimera 4-V1 and the Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (Intel Core i7-3930K) ($4,999 direct, 3.5 stars)?equipped with a giant heat sink?fan unit to keep it cool, and an overclocked Asus video card based on the Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 GPU. A quintet of whisper-quiet fans keep everything cool.

An 850-watt power supply provides more than enough juice for all of the Quiet X79 Gaming PC's components, and additional hardware if you choose to upgrade?and there are plenty of upgrade options available. Though the system comes equipped with 16GB of RAM, there are four open DIMM slots on the motherboard, which supports up to 64GB total RAM. You'll find four open PCI Express (PCIe) slots, though the two PCIe x1 slots are blocked by the bulky video card, and one open 5.25-inch drive bay; four SATA ports are also free.

Because this is a custom gaming rig, you'll find that the hard drive is immaculate, with the only software installed being Windows 7 Professional. The Quiet X79 Gaming PC also comes with AVADirect's Silver Warranty Package, a three-year warranty on parts and labor.

Performance
In our tests the Quiet X79 Gaming PC proved it's able to mix it up with much more expensive gaming rigs. It tore through our processor-intensive Photoshop CS5 test in 2 minutes 31 seconds?ahead of the Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 (2:34) and the iBuypower Chimera 4-V1 (2:42), but behind the 2:21 of the Digital Storm ODE Level 3 ($2,399 direct, 4.5 stars) and the 2:22 of the Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (2:22). It finished Handbrake in 58 seconds, beating out the Chimera 4-V1 (1:03) and tying with the Ignition X7900i-3960 (0:58), but falling short of the ODE Level 3 (0:56).

The Quiet X79 Gaming PC pumped out respectable frame rates in our gaming tests, cranking through Crysis and Lost Planet 2 at 43 frames per second (fps), both at 1,920-by-1080 resolution with 4x anti-aliasing and high detail settings. Although these are playable scores, they can't match those of rigs running multiple graphics cards, like the ODE Level 3 (71 fps in Crysis, 122 fps in Lost Planet 2), which is equipped with two GTX 570 cards, or the Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (44fps in Crysis, 81fps in Lost Planet 2), which contains two GTX 580 cards.

The AVADirect Quiet X79 Gaming PC offers impressive performance and graphics for its relatively modest price tag. If you want a gaming rig that offers similar processing power, better graphics performance and a lower price, you may want to opt for the Digital Storm ODE Level 3, our Editors' Choice for midrange gaming PCs. Bomb kills 8 Afghans on patrol in south

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? A bomb exploded as a foot patrol of Afghan and NATO forces was passing by in the south of the country, killing eight Afghans and one international service member, an Afghan official said Sunday.

The group was patrolling through Arghandab district in Kandahar province late Saturday when it was caught in the blast, said Shah Mohammad, the district administrator. Arghandab is a farming region just outside Kandahar city that has long been a bed-down area for Taliban insurgents. It was one of a number of communities around Kandahar city that were targeted in a 2010 sweep to oust the insurgency from the area.

The Afghan dead included three police officers, four members of the Afghan "local police" ? a government-sponsored militia force ? and one translator, Mohammad said.

NATO reported earlier Sunday that one of its service members was killed in a bomb attack in southern Afghanistan on Saturday but did not provide additional details. It was not clear if this referred to the same incident, as NATO usually waits for individual coalition nations to confirm the details of deaths of their troops.

I feel like I'm letting my own insecurities get the best of me when I saw her facebook and pictures of her ex boyfriends kissing, etc... I deleted all my pictures of my exs on FB because frankly in my mind, it's the past, I've learned from it, and don't need to see that. She's even asked me why there are no pictures of me with girls on my FB, I told her because it's the past, I deleted them, and she said well they are your memories, don't you want to be able to look back one day when you're old and remember? I said, honestly, no, I'll be concentrating on my wife and family at that point... Should I say something and rock the boat, or just let it be?

It's all about how her attitude is about keeping momentos. Some will keep letters/ poems, but no pics, some will keep movie ticket stubs from their first date. Some will keep flowers pressed in a bible. Some people are very confident in their memories, and don't need any rememberences of the past- this seems to be you. But I don't think its a huge thing just because she deals with her past differently than you. Would you two be compatible for marriage??- Probably not. But I don't think it should be an issue if you are just dating.

While what she says is true... you also don't need photos all up in your facebook profile either of your exes, especially intimate ones. You can still reminiesce from MEMORY. She's like a hoarder of past relationships. Like it didn't happen if she doesn't have a photo or physical reminder to trigger the memory. It sounds to me like something you'll have to ignore if you want to stick it out with her. I don't think she realizes that something like this could be a huge turnoff for most guys.

A little creepy to me because it is on facebook which is shared. Is she still in contact with these ex-lovers? I would assume so and that makes sense. You have only been dating a couple of months. I would see this as a huge issue if this gets exclusive between the two of you. If you were to become engaged I would expect her not only to take these photos down from FB but to unfriend her ex-lovers and no longer be in contact with them. But you are not there yet. It is more likely your photos will be added to the gallery and the next dude will wonder what is up with that. Govt to keep info on Americans with no terror ties

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. intelligence community will now be able to store information about Americans with no ties to terrorism for up to five years under new Obama administration guidelines.

Until now, the National Counterterrorism Center had to immediately destroy information about Americans that was already stored in other government databases when there were no clear ties to terrorism.

Giving the NCTC expanded record-retention authority had been called for by members of Congress who said the intelligence community did not connect strands of intelligence held by multiple agencies leading up to the failed bombing attempt on a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas 2009.

"Following the failed terrorist attack in December 2009, representatives of the counterterrorism community concluded it is vital for NCTC to be provided with a variety of datasets from various agencies that contain terrorism information," Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said in a statement late Thursday. "The ability to search against these datasets for up to five years on a continuing basis as these updated guidelines permit will enable NCTC to accomplish its mission more practically and effectively."

The new rules replace guidelines issued in 2008 and have privacy advocates concerned about the potential for data-mining information on innocent Americans.

"It is a vast expansion of the government's surveillance authority," Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, said of the five-year retention period.

The government put in strong safeguards at the NCTC for the data that would be collected on U.S. citizens for intelligence purposes, Rotenberg said. These new guidelines undercut the Federal Privacy Act, he said.

"The fact that this data can be retained for five years on U.S. citizens for whom there's no evidence of criminal conduct is very disturbing," Rotenberg said.

"Total Information Awareness appears to be reconstructing itself," Rotenberg said, referring to the Defense Department's post-9/11 data-mining research program that was killed in 2003 because of privacy concerns.

The Washington Post first reported the new rules Thursday.

The Obama administration said the new rules come with strong safeguards for privacy and civil liberties as well. Before the NCTC may obtain data held by another government agency, there is a high-level review to assure that the data "is likely to contain significant terrorism information," Alexander Joel, the civil liberties protection officer at national intelligence directorate, said in a news release Thursday.

The NCTC was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to be the central U.S. organization to analyze and integrate intelligence regarding terrorism.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Weather Channel is in the midst of a transformation, one that can be traced in part to an idle afternoon Al Roker spent surfing the Web a couple of years ago.

Pleased with the ratings earned by some new series, the network is increasing by 70 percent the amount of original programming it had planned to offer this year, and will debut at least one new show each month for the rest of the year.

The Weather Channel recognized that it needed things to keep people watching for longer than it took for the next local forecast to pop up. Past attempts at programming, series like "Storm Stories," tried this with a focus chiefly on the weather. Now network managers are embracing programs where the weather or other natural forces are just one of many characters.

The old Weather Channel wouldn't have considered "Ice Road Truckers," History's hit series about freight-haulers braving treacherous conditions in Canada, for example. Now it clearly would, since earlier this month the network premiered "Ice Pilots," about people who fly in those same conditions.

"Coast Guard Alaska," which details rescues in a forbidding climate, has done so well since its November premiere that The Weather Channel has already ordered a spinoff series involving a U.S. Coast Guard station in Florida.

The Coast Guard series come from Roker, who while Web surfing one afternoon noticed some rescue videos that the agency had posted on YouTube. He quickly set up a meeting with the Coast Guard to put the series together.

Viewers know Roker primarily for trading quips and giving forecasts as part of the "Today" show team, but off-screen he operates a thriving production company that supplies material to Spike, HGTV, A&E, The Cooking Channel and now The Weather Channel.

"The previous management didn't really see the big picture," Roker said. "They didn't think the audience would watch these kinds of shows."

The premiere of "Coast Guard Alaska" increased viewership in its time slot by 35 percent over the previous four weeks' average, Nielsen said. The first "Ice Pilots" increased the audience size by 60 percent.

The Weather Channel feels freer to offer these series partly because up-to-date forecast information is available through TWC online or on mobile devices, Dingley said. The Weather Channel named a new chief executive in January whose top priority is growing the network's website and mobile applications.

While the new shows have helped ratings, The Weather Channel executives must be mindful of a wary fan base that insists upon weather being the top priority. Viewers were sharply critical last spring ? and TWC meteorologist Jim Cantore tweeted an apology ? when the network did not interrupt a movie to cover a tornado outbreak in Arkansas.

The network has ditched movies, Dingley said.

Managers deserve credit for making "down time" at The Weather Channel more interesting, and half-hour series offer a better chance for flexibility when urgent weather news makes it important to cut into pre-recorded programming, said Mike James, who runs the News Blues website and has been critical of some network moves.

James said he worries that weather will become secondary to profit-seeking at The Weather Channel, which was bought in 2008 by a consortium of Bain Capital, The Blackstone Group and NBC Universal. NBC has a highly profitable stable of cable networks like USA and Bravo.

"Lately I've been calling it 'The Advertising Channel,'" James said. "I challenge you to visit TWC in prime time and not hit a commercial in progress."

Dingley said he recognizes change can turn off some old viewers. But he noted that TWC continues to offer local weather forecasts every 10 minutes, even during entertainment programming.

The network aired a two-hour block of entertainment programming three nights a week when Dingley arrived, and quickly expanded that first to five and now seven nights. The 70 percent expansion in programming recently authorized will mean more new shows and less reruns within those two-hour blocks, he said.

Eventually, however, the goal is to expand to three hours of entertainment programming in prime time, and also air some of those shows during the day, he said.

Last month the network began airing "Lifeguard!," about beach rescuers in southern California. April brings "Turbine Cowboys," about people who build and maintain wind turbines. "Iron Men," about New York ironworkers, starts in May. "Lights Out," in June, is about an Arkansas crew that restores power after severe weather. July brings the hurricane season and "Hurricane Hunters," a series about people who fly into storms to collect weather data.

If the new shows are well chosen, Roker said he believed The Weather Channel viewers will embrace them.

"Everybody needs to evolve," said Roker, who also hosts the "Wake Up with Al" forecasting show early on weekday mornings. "The History channel has a new definition of what history is on their channel. A&E has redefined who they are. If it's a good story and well told and you're not talking down to the audience, I think it's going to do well."

The Weather Channel "is a different channel today than it was even a year ago," Roker said, "and I think it's for the better."

The battered real estate market has another side effect that often goes overlooked, consumer finance and tax experts say: Millions of homeowners are unknowingly paying too much property tax.

According to the National Taxpayers Union, about 30 percent of properties in the U.S. are assessed at higher values than they are really worth. That means their owners pay inflated property tax bills while other taxpayers in their towns reap the benefits.

Cities, counties and school districts are collecting 20 percent more in property taxes than they did in 2006, before the housing bubble burst and when home values were one-third higher than they are today, USA Today reported.

Though some of the assessments may have adjusted, the total amount of local state and property tax collection has only taken a small dip very recently, said Pete Sepp, executive vice president of the National Taxpayers Union.
Sepp said that may mean the assessments have been decreasing but property tax rates may be increasing.

?Homeowners probably haven?t been getting the relief they expected when values dropped,? he said.

In 2003, the New York Public Interest Research Group examined assessment accuracy of nearly 700,000 homes in New York City and found that 31 percent were incorrectly over or under-assessed, based on fair market value.

Meanwhile, only 2 percent of homeowners appeal their property taxes, according to the National Taxpayers Union.

Lisa Gerstner, staff writer with Kiplinger?s Personal Finance Magazine, said most local governments only assess property values every two or three years. Gerstner said it?s important to know how your local government assesses properties. Sometimes homes are compared with a recently sold home. Other cities and towns may apply a computer algorithm to adjust property values.

It?s important that the locality take into consideration the ratio of homes to business properties so each sector pays their fair share of the tax burden. Home and commercial property values do not always move in tandem.

Next, homeowners should check for accuracy in your property?s report card from the local tax assessor such as errors in number of rooms or size.

In the April issue of Kiplinger?s Personal Finance Magazine, Gerstner said if you can find five or more similar properties at significantly lower values, you may have a good case to fight your property assessment.

The Census Bureau has data about median real estate taxes paid across the country, and like in previous years, the most recent data from 2010 shows New York and New Jersey collect the highest county property taxes.
